This was my first full season of SPL and hopefully, life permitting, I'm lucky enough to participate again.
Week 1 vs Void
With 2 weeks to prepare for 1 game, this was probably the best team I built all season. Sort of expected this type of 'mid-range' offense from Void. Turn 1 I think I pumped and then was planning to hard Rotom on boom. Of course, he boomed so plan went out the window. Turn 2 I made a mistake IMO. I just assumed he was going to go to Rocks TTar or Breloom so went Rachi, in hindsight Heatran from me is better. His most likely options for a rocker if he's running CB Azelf are Heatran, Jirachi, Metagross or TTar so my Heatran covers 3/4 since I'm Shuca. Turn 4, booming on Hydro was correct, I always live Pump even from Modest but not +1 Pump so I can't risk CM. Turn 6 was fine, even if he's got a ghost I don't have Superpower for Heatran. I probably could have guessed he was Custap since he switched out on my Tran, but Focus Punch is always reasonable. My T-Wave was good on turn 8 as he scouts for Scarf Jirachi. Turn 12 was me just throwing the game. At this point, my timer was getting low (60 seconds) because I thought Void was using a Starmaster team and spent 3 minutes looking for it which killed my clock (he wasn't). I thought I just won with loom once Empoleon was chipped and forgot about.. Substitute. There is no reason I don't go Rotom. Turn 13 was me completing the throw by activating the giga throw. Surf has 5/16 rolls to break Substitute, but yeah, I forgot about this move. I had been so accustomed to seeing Shuca + 3 attacks or just Gyarados. Funnily enough, if he was Gyarados, I'm sure I'd have seen this line with Rotom but I brainfarted against Empoleon.
Result: Loss, 0-1
Team Rating: 9.5 / 10 - very solid balance team with counterplay vs. all types of teams and some cool techs like my Jira set (Twave + lum).
Gameplay: 3 / 10 - I played this game fine until t12 but made a critical mistake that cost me the game.
Week 2 vs Pideous
Probably the 2nd most embarrassing game in terms of prep. I was certain I was gonna get stalled and had all week to build something that beat stall and couldn't land on anything I liked enough in case I ran into another Azelf team. I defaulted into the stall killer team that Zf used last year against Oiponabys. When I saw stall, I thought that my MU was gonna be 100-0, I feel very comfortable with stall into stall overall. Then I realized it was much closer to 0-100 at the reveal of Shed Shell Skarm... I was surprised to see Shed Skarm since I rarely ever use Mag, ofc the one time I bring Mag all season I play Shed Skarm. I think I played this game very well, recovering from a freeze on Clef (which I probably shouldn't have risked in hindsight). At the end of the game there were two sequences I wanted to touch on, I managed to get his Clef to 1 knock off remaining. I made a classic mistake of not taking the chance early and then getting impatient after fucking up twice. Basically, he held onto the last knock twice and then ended up Knocking Clef. At the time, I thought this wasn't the end of the world since I thought his last might also be Magneton, turns out it was Jirachi and once my clef got Knocked I lost my best chance at beating his Jirachi. At the very end, I had a chance to twave his Jirachi with Latias, I should have played for a choke and I didn't. I'm not gonna talk about my Scizor getting paralyzed over and over when I would have stalled Skarm out of Roost ... Pokemon I guess. Probably didn't change the end. Pideous is still the GOAT and his record isn't indicative of his skill
Result: Loss, 0-2
Team Rating: 9.5 / 10 - This is still one of the best teams ever I just walked into a heinous MU but it was bad prep cuz 50% of Skarms Pideous uses are Shed Shell..
Gameplay: 5 / 10 - I played better than week 1 like no play just lost me the game, but I fucked up at the end when the ball was in my court. I'm proud I made this game pretty close considering how bad the MU ended up being into Shed Skarm + 3 attack Jira..
Week 3 vs hclat
I brought an updated team from 2009, lol. I love DPP. Metagross doesn't have Meteor Mash so I have to Rocks t1.. He made a good play to taunt me so already I was a bit behind. Hclat makes a mistake to sub since his Jirachi HP is very important as it's mono-steel.. honestly maybe his team shouldn't have sub Jirachi, but it's just a clicker team so it's prob fine. Since he locks into outrage turn 10, I just go for the W. I was a bit surprised by Passho ttar. Once I saw Machamp I was like 90% sure Gyara was last since this is a known team. I just wanted to attack Machamp and not let him Sub and I had CB Scizor in the back anyways if Flygon hits itself in confusion.
Result: Win, 1-2
Team Rating: 6 / 10 - I just wanted to use this team. It has some resources to beat stall but mostly brought it since I didn't think I'd get stalled this week and it does well into offense and balance.
Gameplay: 9 / 10 - Don’t think I made any mistakes here but maybe didn’t need to risk Empoleon setup.
Week 4 vs Skyrio
Lots of people think Smeargle is bad, but it really isn’t. You have odds against Azelf with Uturn, you can always hard Spore on their Rocks too. Smeargle only plays you into unwindable MU vs Lum berry leads that are faster or like Lum Taunt Gyara.. When I saw Tran I assumed this mu would be like 100-0 for me, but he revealed Timid Tran which I think is not very good cause you lose Overheat OHKO potential on Azelf (but out speeding sash breloom is nice). I could have gone for a 2nd layer of spikes but usually you don’t need more than 1 and I wanted to keep Smeargle for a sac. On turn 5 my Uturn does 0 dmg to Bronzong because my teammates tried to grief me and said I needed Max SDef CB Scizor… if I was standard Scizor, the Hypno dodge would have just won me the game cuz Tbolt kills and he never gets rain.. Anyways, I was able to put Kingdra into priority range by trading Starmie and I think I played the endgame well to give me any odds with Rotom. I got lucky with the 4 turn sleep but a crit or SDef drop would’ve done it too. I also had odds to dodge Fire Blast. I thought this MU was pretty bad, if Kingdra was saved for a little later I would’ve lost since Suicune or Empoleon would’ve forced out my Starmie — but it’s not objectively wrong to go Kingdra there so it’s not like my opponent made any mistakes.
Result: Win, 2-2
Team Rating: 8.5 / 10 - Hard to give Smeargle a higher rating since there are MUs it does.. just lose. But lol revamped Kevin Please Come Home won an SPL game in 2024. I also didn’t build this team around that team but Rewer pointed it out after and that’s funny AF.
Gameplay: 9 / 10 - I was very happy with how I played this, not much I would’ve changed.
Week 5 vs. Malekith
I had negative time this week, I was working all week then had a wedding. I built this team before the season and had lots of games with it and it wasn’t in my replays. I figured Malekith just didn’t want to lose to Cradily, so I expected like Jirachi, Metagross, Loom, stuff like that… but didn’t expert Pursuit Metagross, F. Anyways, my team is objectively ass, I probably just was winning with it cuz I knew how to use it. BKC is right, this team didn’t know if it wanted to be stall or offense but in my defense.. balance is probably viable...
Turn 1 Willo miss actually set me back a lot, burn on Jirachi would’ve been useless but it meant I didn’t bolt the Tran.. if I got damage on Tran I would’ve known he was scarf and lots of stuff changes, like turn 4 I’d have rocks. I’m likely not in the position where I need to boom my Heatran. Turn 11, I get parad on Mash which sucked because Rotom actually has win odds with Latias dead.. lol. Anyways, game was kinda taken away from me but good bring by my opponent and my team was ass so it’s on me.
Result: Loss, 3-2
Team Rating: 1 / 10 - Trash team, just beats noobs..
Gameplay: 6 / 10 - I honestly played fine but I lost. I had chances to Ice Beam Breloom but I needed a crit so I didn’t even bother.
Week 6 vs. Mishimono
I decided to bring offense this week. I was originally experimenting with Offensive Zapdos, but didn’t make anything I liked enough so I switched to this like 20 mins before my game. Scarf Taunt Heatran was very interesting, turn 5 getting to U-Turn on Starmie was very good for me because it opens up ape and lucario. There wasn’t too much else to talk about, I made some good plays with U-Turning Flygon and luckily Stone Edge hit Zapdos. On Turn 14, I could have used Zen Headbutt to kill Zapdos, but I didn’t want to risk a miss but this was probably a mistake. Turn 16, I kinda threw by staying in. If he Fire Blasts I come back in to set up and win… so just going Scizor is always correct. Turn 17 I crit Breloom but it didn’t matter in the end. I’d sac Scizor, bring in Lucario (which lives Mach Punch), CC then e-speed Jirachi for chip and EQ to win the game.
Result: Win, 3-3
Team Rating: 7.5 / 10 - I don’t think this team is as good as Smeargle Offense but it’s probably better than the TyraniBoah team.
Gameplay: 7.5 / 10 - I won this game but made a big mistake with Dragonite so can’t give myself a better score.
Week 7 vs. Twash
My other team I was planning was way cooler, but it was objectively shit like my Malekith team but had cool Pokemon like Abomasnow. I think it would’ve got smacked so glad I switched.. 20 mins before the game again. This team was made by DBC. My biggest mistake IMO was turn 37, since he revealed no GK, I could have surfed here which would have lowered the chance to get haxed, since Jirachi is then just in EQ range. I got tons of turns right, avoiding tricks on my most important mons. The freeze was unfortunate on Clef but it was the right play to go Clef there. I got some nice crits in the end which lowered his chance of freezing and killing me. Milotic won 3 games this week in 3 uses, lol.
Result: Win, 4-3
Team Rating: 9 / 10 - Solid stall team can’t say much bad about it. I hate weatherless stall but this is one of the better ones..
Gameplay: 9 / 10 - I think this was my best played game all season to this point, very happy with the moves I made.
Week 8 vs. Le Don
This team was built by PDC & DBC. It is a very solid team. Turn 1, I figured he was probably slow Specs Latias lead.. he almost definitely was since he thought about this turn for 3+ minutes. Anyways, I still have to switch, I get rocks, everything is fine. Turn 5 I thought he would think I’m obviously going to click explosion with 46% Heatran but he goes Latias anyways.. I should have exploded. I'm bad. Turn 6 I just sac to surf because it gives me free Kingdra and maybe he is aggressive and uses a dragon move.. Kingdra comes in and on Turn 9 he lives with 1hp, which is annoying.. but it’s only an OHKO 43% of the time at 100% accuracy. Turn 11, I miss Pump.. which OHKOs. I think it’s hard to make the argument to click Surf, for 1 Hydro Kills and 2 the better mid ground is prob Rain Dance. Anyways, I rly don’t know why he doesn’t sac Latias here. On Turn 12, I’ve revealed I’m not scarf Flygon (didn’t Uturn t1) and specs Lati, so Scarf Meta is likely. His Skarmory lives Mash even after rocks and he just Roosts so I think why stay in (he has mag unrevealed in back). So I go for Thunder Punch but I ignored Dave’s wise words from 2013 of “when you see a threat kill it” In hindsight, this play is so bad lol, even if Skarm roosts I have mix gon so who cares. Turn 17, I don’t think this is a tie because French don’t run 350 Gengar but I have to risk anyways. I play the rest of this game perfect, a bit unfortunate he is HP Ice Magneton (which surprised me cuz he has Swampert for Flygon/Dragonite). Pump missing is garbage but I beat myself over predicting. Mashing TTar likely leads to a win.. assuming I get all the endgame correct again. At the end of the day, this game made me go crazy for like 48 hours at least (still does) even tho it wouldn’t have changed the final result for my team. It’s an interesting mental place to know that you should have won if the moves just hit but you still could have played better to avoid it.
Result: Loss, 4-4
Team Rating: 9.5 / 10 - Probably the best team I brought this season along with my w1 team.. and both lost.
Gameplay: 2 / 10 - I played end game perfect but didn’t matter since I had 2 huge fuck ups. Worst game of the season for me.
Week 9 vs. BlazingDark
I believe this team was originally made by Pride. I was deciding between a few UUs and I went with Torterra. I also wanted to use Vaporeon since nobody brought it after ppl were worried about sub pass (lol). Turn 3 Toxic is very helpful. Turn 6 I actually misclicked and meant to hit toxic spikes but spikes ended up being better, nice. Turn 10, I get parad on rocks. I think the only mistake I made all game was I should’ve just spiked again w forre instead of going Torterra on SD. I fought through a good bit of hax this game so happy I won, I needed to be very careful of Suicune because if he has rocks and is +1 my Zapdos dies and it kind of just beats me by itself. Basically, as long as my Zapdos wasn’t paralyzed or tricked it could win.
Result: Win, 5-4
Team Rating: 6 / 10 - This team is cool but it’s weak to modern stall, which is why I didn’t bring it while my team was still competing. Heatran is RestTalk and so is Rotom-H so you can always out sit Clefable but still dire.
Gameplay: 10 / 10 - ofc my best game was when my team was out and I used troll mons..
Good luck to the remaining competitors and most importantly long live DPP!
