Smogon Premier League XV - Commencement Thread

ABR / Amaranth / chuva de perereca / Gefährlicher Random / Heroic Troller / Nails / Serpi / Sceptross - Players who are clear RBY OU starters. The first seven should be pretty self-explanatory, while Sceptross is an old Pokemon Perfect boomer who is the only player who's competed in every RBY Invitational so far and has yet to finish in the bottom half (Top 12, 3rd, Top 16, 4th). He has been grinding with chuva de perereca all year and his level is on pair with anyone in this list.

Khaetis / SaDiSTiCNarwhal - Players who should round out the pool as starters or support to pair with those who might want to swap. Khaetis won RBY Invitational III without dropping a single set, including wins over marcoasd and Kaz twice. He sat out this year but has time to deliver in SPL XV. He's has great game sense, especially in the long term, and Kaz and spies directly vouch for him. SaDiSTiCNarwhal finished Top 8 in RBY Invitational IV with wins over Kaz and Lusch, has the second best record in RBYPL/RBYWC all time (behind only Serpi), 2x RBY Individual Winner, and has prior SPL experience. Get this man back in the spotlight.

Excal / Laroxyl / Kenix / TDK - Players who can easily start in RBY, but will likely be needed in other tiers (DPP / SV / GSC / SV / TBD)

chub / Ctown6 / nicole7735 / Sabelette - Players who are likely on the cusp of playing in SPL / would likely get a chance to start or support this year if the pool wasn't the most stacked since SPL IX.

Want to double down on the Narwhal recommendation. He is 100% an SPL player. Narwhal carried our Retro Cup team with the best record, I think 6-0 or 5-1, and we had teammates like Lax, Star, Marcop, Finchinator. Narwhal is really really good and has proven he can win in team tour environments.

Sorry, I'm quite screwed/too busy: I still look at myself as a retired player. When I said I was going to retire I knew what I was talking about!
That's unfortunate, because this is the best pool ever in spite of some withdrawals. Oh well, the community is growing lager and larger and better and better, maybe sometime in the future... if they'll draft me! At this point you never know.

Hello, I am MAVERICK SHOOTERS, I am enjoying building and playing all new gens of OU. I used to be just a high ladder player hitting 2k often in ss and since last year with start of SV I have been transitioning into tournaments, playing and helping in prep for tournaments like WCOP,OUPL,etc. while working on improving myself with each tour. I won my first individual SV tournament couple months ago,I'd like to be a hard working player and help elevate everyone's prep on whichever tier I can support with lot of teams and ideas.I am very familiar with the current meta of SV OU and I wanna continue exactly that with SPL being a nice opportunity to get even more involved with it.I am gonna actively contribute in the preparation and testing of the starting slots if you wish to consider me in your low budget players plans.Regardless,good luck and have a good tournament everyone involved

good bw picks:

Monai absolutely ought to be a starter, last year's record is not indicative of his care for the tier

IUPLC is a cool dude with a strong understanding of the the tier. he uses terrakion a lot and clicks the right button. pretty commendable

Dababy2 is worth a sub pick up minimum. an actually good ladder hero with a polarizing ethos, but he knows how to click buttons well. he has tele energy.

marsandback is much of the same as dababy but a bit more respectable.

a couple lesser known dpp picks that are worth consideration:

Cubic Skunk won dpp seasonal; not bad placements in rising stars and circuit tours. he'd probably snatch a couple wins as a starter but his strengths lie in that he's active, up to date with the meta, and 100% self-sufficient. if you're starting someone in dpp who hasn't played the tier in a while or needs some building support and a reasonable backup in case things go wrong, this is your guy imo

lele3 has a couple deep smaller tour runs and builds as well. nice personality to have around in a teamchat and i think they're a future spl player if they keep grinding. worth looking into as a building/playing dpp sub as well.

Skyrio don't have the whole breakdown of their play in other tiers/how known they are etc but the dpp piloting is good and he's well-connected with other french dpp players. good showing in masters + good victories in rising stars makes me think they're 100% worth picking up as a sub at minimum for a variety of tiers. really solid player imo

also i rly hope Dj Breloominati♬ gets bought, great up & coming versatile player who's gonna do really well when they finally get their chance.

Since we're doing this buy my ADV guys Tycarter and Kollin7. Ty has been tearing it up on discord and the forums lately and can help in classic and fairy gens. Kollin is a grinder who's been playing this tier nonstop all year and has a great understanding of how to win consistently. Both would be great subs or cheap starters. Also we should objectively be seeing Sadly and Endill start again, don't just look at their records last year these guys are GOATS.

just wanted to give my side of the matter concerning me getting banned from SPL

I simply stated the idea of playing for Leru was not appealing to me based on how I’ve seen him as a member of this community carry himself. I didn’t realized I needed to watch my words so carefully when I simply am not high on the individual who is requesting me to play for his team. I of course look forward to playing for any manager that decides to draft me but just like Lax made in a post in commencement (now deleted) and other players have made clear in the past….I would prefer to play for a team that holds the same playing values that I do, and Leru as we’ve seen just recently does not seem to hold upstanding values towards his peers in the community, and him attempting to remove me from this tournament as a whole just only confirms that.

I don't understand this ban. The rule stated is the following: "If you are interested in playing, be aware that any team may buy you, and you are expected to play for any one of them." This rule is supposed to apply in situations like Ojama refusing to play after being bought by the BIGs in SPL XI. This situation is not the same at all, though. The ruling applied here seems to be based on a false equivalence; expressing that you you aren't interested in / prefer not to play for a certain manager/team before the draft isn't the same as refusing to play after being bought by them. Are you supposed to say "yes, I would love to play for you" to any manager gauging your interest before the draft in order to avoid an SPL ban?

Ok so let’s say Leru did draft mind gaming, and then let’s say mind gaming cancers, and states not wanting to work with Leru is the reason he cancered, he gets banned, makes sense. But instead he is upfront with Leru and says that he wishes to not get drafted by him (which should be useful information for Leru? Cause they won’t cancer?) So then Leru rats them out, and they’re banned.

While I understand the rationale of preventing people abusing this (just saying “I don’t like you” to 9/10 teams to pick who you’re drafted by) but this is one person who had reasonable concerns with one manager (not even a team). And I think this is a major concern for people in the future who have genuine concerns with managers before the draft.
