With the blunder vs CBB game fresh on our minds...
The social media team has been doing a great job preparing game highlights and replays every week this SPL. They have also been advertising and featuring key games live in order to bring even more interest. The blunder/CBB game was a great example of this, and with even minimal advertising brought in more than 2000 live spectators. Some lag-related bumps aside this is awesome—it's great exposure for the players involved, for our flagship tours, and for Smogon as a whole.
That being said, with greater publicity, there are some other things we need to keep in mind. Our behavior during the games can serve to reflect on Smogon as a whole. While we respect the individuality things like tour names and Pokemon nicknames can bring to a game, I can't pretend that it's a good look for Smogon as a whole if we advertise a major game only to have new spectators met with some of the... edgier nicknames that have grown in popularity as of late.
I don't really think there's a need for anyone to turn into the nickname police. We're all adults or close to it here. That said, if you're playing in SPL this year, please just remember that you're playing on the big stage, and save the edgy nicks for friendlies and unofficials.
