Registeel's hard body, which is apparently harder than any metal ever, gives it unparalleled defenses in the RU tier. Its Steel typing is great defensively, letting it check threats like Gardevoir, Roserade, Swellow, and Dragalge, and it finds many opportunities to set up Stealth Rock thanks to this, making it very consistent as a defensive threat. It can even often take super effective attacks quite easily thanks to its amazing bulk. Registeel is overall quite reliable as a stop to a lot of common threats in the RU metagame, and it is a primary choice as a Stealth Rock user for many teams and a must-have on any defensive team as a premier Fairy-type counter.
Registeel @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic
- Protect
- Seismic Toss
A specially defensive set embraces Registeel's great typing and bulk to check threatening attackers such as Dragalge and Gardevoir. Stealth Rock is mandatory for a lot of teams, and Registeel is a great user of it. Toxic hits many of Registeel's switch-ins and is useful to wear down the threats Registeel checks. Protect is useful for gaining some Leftovers recovery, scouting for attacks, accumulating Toxic damage, and even wasting the PP of moves like Focus Blast and Fire Blast. Seismic Toss does consistent damage and gives Registeel some offensive presence. Earthquake is an option to lure in and hit Salazzle, but Protect is almost always better. Registeel fits on a lot of teams as a primary Stealth Rock user and is good for teams weak to special attackers, as it's a great stop to a lot of offensive Pokemon. It's also good at spreading status across teams, weakening them for late-game teammates.
Registeel does have its flaws, though. Firstly, Registeel lacks reliable recovery outside of Leftovers, making it pretty easy to wear down and slightly less consistent at checking the threats it needs to. Registeel's Steel typing is also sometimes detrimental due to the many Pokemon capable of taking advantage of it, like Bewear, Flygon, Salazzle, and Zygarde-10%. Registeel is also susceptible to Doublade, which can take advantage of it and use it as setup fodder, and Taunt users like Mismagius and Rocky Helmet Chesnaught. Registeel is also quite one-dimensional, making it predictable and not that hard to play around.
Even with these flaws, Registeel is an amazing defensive threat in the current RU metagame and is useful on many different types of teams. Give it a try on your next RU team!
