Registeel hasn't changed much, if at all, since his release in ADV. He is one of the sturdiest Pokemon in UU, and has the ability to check numerous threats. Unfortunately for Registeel, he faces competition from other Steel-type Pokemon in UU, such as Bronzong, who sports a better defensive typing and is immune to the omnipresent Spikes; Empoleon, who boasts better offensive stats and moves such as Scald and Roar; and Escavalier, who hits extremely hard thanks to his great Attack stat. However, this doesn't mean Registeel isn't a good support Pokemon. He has a decent support movepool, which includes moves such as Thunder Wave and Stealth Rock, and has the highest defensive stats of any Steel-type in UU. Although Registeel struggles to deal much damage to foes thanks to his poor offensive stats, he's an excellent choice for teams in need of a counter to fast and powerful threats such as Shaymin, Raikou, and Stoutland.

[SET COMMENTS]

This is the best set Registeel can run in UU. Thanks to his great special bulk, he can check many threats in the metagame, such as Shaymin, Kingdra, and Raikou. Registeel gets plenty of opportunities to switch in, and will therefore almost always be able to set up Stealth Rock reliably; this is essential for deterring Pokemon who threaten Registeel, such as Darmanitan, from switching in. Thunder Wave is Registeel main selling point, as it cripples most sweepers for the remainder of the match; it is also one of the main reasons to use Registeel over similar Pokemon, such as Bronzong. However, Toxic can be used over Thunder Wave to cripple bulky opponents, such as Slowbro and Rhyperior, who otherwise laugh at Registeel. As Registeel's offensive stats are quite low, Seismic Toss is the best move for him to chip away at his opponents. Earthquake is the preferred option in the last slot as it hits Pokemon such as Darmanitan and Chandelure for super effective damage on the switch. However, Shadow Claw hits Mismagius, Rotom, and Xatu.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EV spread maximizes Registeel's special bulk as his typing lends itself to walling special attackers, and because most physical attackers in UU carry a Fighting or Ground move that hits Registeel for super effective damage. There's also the option of moving some EVs into Attack to hit a bit harder. Registeel can run Ice Punch in the last slot to nail common counters, such as Flygon, on the switch. Rest is the only recovery move Registeel can use, but is not recommended unless a teammate can provide cleric support, as it forces Registeel to stay asleep for two turns, which reset every time he switches out.

As Registeel lacks reliable recovery, partners that can provide Wish support, such as Umbreon and Togekiss, are recommended. Registeel works well in tandem with Pokemon that can take Fighting-, Ground- and Fire-type attacks, such as Gligar, Zapdos, and Slowbro, while Registeel can easily sponge any super effective attack directed at them. Ghost-types such as Sableye can not only take Fighting-type attacks for Registeel, but also stop Rapid Spin users from spinning away Stealth Rock.

[Other Options]

Registeel can run a mono-attacking set consisting of Curse, Iron Head, Rest, and Sleep Talk. This can be devastating for teams that lack a reliable way to take Registeel out, but the prevalence of Pokemon such as Chandelure, Heracross, and Machamp reduce the effectiveness of the set. Registeel has a wide offensive movepool with moves such as Thunderbolt, Hammer Arm, and Ice Punch, but he unfortunately lacks the attacking stats to use them effectively. Finally, Registeel has some other support moves, such as Counter, Gravity, and Rain Dance, which can be helpful in certain situations.

[Checks and Counters]

Even though Registeel has fantastic defensive stats and the ability to check many threats, he has trouble with bulky Pokemon thanks to his lackluster offenses. Bulky Pokemon who can hit Registeel with a super effective STAB move are usually your best bet at taking him out. Chandelure, Rhyperior, and Machamp can blast Registeel away with their STABs and can set up on him depending on what coverage move he decides to run. However, most of these Pokemon are susceptible to status, especially Toxic. For this reason, status absorbers, such as Nidoking, who is immune to Toxic and Thunder Wave, and can absorb Toxic Spikes, as well as Guts users such as Heracross, are usually good Registeel switch-ins. Finally, Xatu deserves a special mention, as its Magic Bounce ability can bounce back any support move used by Registeel while it heals itself with Roost.

[Unreleased]

Light Metal should never be used on Registeel. While the reduced damage from Low Kick and other weight-based attacks might seem useful, there is only a marginal difference in damage output. This, and the fact that Light Metal causes Registeel to lose some of his crucial moves, such as Seismic Toss and Stealth Rock, makes it an essentially useless ability. Furthermore, Clear Body can even be useful to make Registeel a better check against Shaymin, as it prevents the potentially devastating Special Defense drops that Seed Flare can cause.
