Overview
########
+ 2nd Highest Special Defense in the game, only rivaled by Shuckle, who gets Base 230
+ 100 base Special Attack is very usable against all Regice can cover
+ Base 80 HP is very usable for something with 200 Base Sp. Defense
+ Can have its uses in a Trick Room set for its Base 50 Speed
- This one is based around risk/reward, requiring careful planning around it
- Attack and Speed stats are severely lacking: 50/100/50
Polishing Up a Special Attacker
########
name: "Polishing Up a Special Attacker"
move 1: Ice Beam/Frost Breath
move 2: Thunderbolt/Charge Beam
move 3: Focus Blast
move 4: Rock Polish
ability: Clear Body (default)
item: Occa Berry/Chople Berry/Leftovers/Weakness Policy
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Bold, Timid or Modest Nature (depending on what you want defensively or offensively out of Regice)
Moves
========
- Ice Beam is your main STAB move, and has the capabilities to cripple even Cradily
- Thunderbolt is used for the fantastic coverage it gets, and the 10% paralysis chance
- Charge Beam is used for the 70% chance of raising Sp. Attack by one stage, which will more often than not happen
- Focus Blast is used for coverage against two of its weaknesses at once, Rock and Steel-types, but it's very inaccurate at only 70% accuracy. Very risky
- Rock Polish is the main focus; with one Rock Polish and a Speed-boosting nature, it can out-speed Pokemon that normally won't exceed 436 Speed on their own.
Set Details
========
- All natures provide downgrade to Attack, but noticeable upgrade to stats that it could potentially use
- EVs are used for mainly attempting to set up Rock Polish before it gets melted or crushed
- Clear Body is just an overall great ability; prevents Intimidate, Flatter, and most importantly Fake Tears from working
- Alternatively, you could run 252 Def / 252 SpD / 4 HP if you wanted even more Defensive prowess out of Regice
- Leftovers is a potential item consideration, as it heals ~22-23 HP at the end of every turn
- Occa Berry or Chople Berry could be used to potentially minimize the damage taken from Fire or Fighting-types respectively.
- Weakness Policy could be used to turn tides after +2 Speed and Sp. Attack boosts
Usage Tips
========
- No matter what Special Attacker you switch into, regardless of type, Regice will sponge any attack that's thrown at it, especially Inferno and Focus Blast
- For coverage, Focus Blast covers Rock and Steel-types; alternatively, in place of Thunderbolt/Charge Beam, you could have AncientPower to cover Fire-types
- Best to switch in on Special Attacker, immediately set up Rock Polish, and attempt to dispatch of any enemies
Team Options
========
- To cover the weaknesses this set cannot, Lapras for Fire-types and Mr. Mime/Carbink could be potential choices to cover Regice
- Trick Room team possibility is very high, because of its base 50 Speed, which only gets 218 maximum with a nature of use like Timid
- Of all weather types, Rain and Hail seem to do Regice wonders; as an alternative, Thunder could be included with Regice to do some serious damage
Other Options
########
Some other things you could have on Regice include:
- The infamous Lock-On + Zap Cannon combo. Hits hard and always paralyzes enemies if they survive, and makes a bad day for non-Ground-types, especially those like Articuno, Gorebyss, and Flareon.
- Curse; if you want to give Regice a boost in Defense, but try and make him slower (especially on a Trick Room team), then this is an option for you.
- Thunder. In Damp Rock Rain, Regice could potentially become a monster, especially with Thunder in its repertoire of nasty tricks.
- Flash Cannon; provides better coverage against Rock-types than Focus Blast, and adds coverage against the elusive and ever-frustrating Fairy-type.
- Signal Beam; Regice receives this in ORAS through the Move Tutor. Very nice for the confusion chance, and destroys Mesprit and Musharna.
Checks & Counters
########
- **Weaknesses**: Regice has the capability to survive a +1 Flamethrower from the likes of Mega Camerupt and Typhlosion, but sadly can't even survive a Rock Slide from Archeops. Recommended to have Rock-type coverage like Flash Cannon
- **Stallers**: Pokemon like Umbreon, Wigglytuff and Swalot are good stallers that can be used and can even destroy Regice. Weakness Policy could potentially turn the tides of battles against stallers, as well as coverage against three Pokemon like the aforementioned.
- **Traps**: Toxic Spikes and especially Stealth Rocks are traps that Regice must try and avoid getting into at all times. Rapid Spinners and/or Levitating Pokemon are recommended to get past these traps, like Torkoal or Cryogonal respectively.
