Mega Gengar is a powerhouse in the Ubers metagame due to its high offensive stats, its ability, and its good movepool enabling it to run a wide variety of sets and making it threatening and hard to predict. Mega Gengar can fill a plenty of roles, such as wallbreaker, stallbreaker, and revenge killer, and fit in nearly every playstyle. It also has some utility, such as being able to check Swords Dance Arceus-Normal and Arceus-Ghost, trap threats with Shadow Tag, spinblock, neuter foes with Taunt or Will-O-Wisp, and beat threats with Destiny Bond and the right plays. Despite all those good points, Mega Gengar has very low bulk, making it easily threatened by any attacker. It is also susceptible to Pursuit and vulnerable to common offensive Pokemon such as Yveltal, Deoxys-A, Arceus-Ground, Choice Scarf users, Marshadow, and Arceus-Dark if it doesn't pack Focus Blast. Zygarde-C can shrug off any attack from Mega Gengar and retaliate with Dragon Tail or Thousand Arrows, and Mega Sableye can also deal huge damage to Mega Gengar and escape from Shadow Tag.
Gengar @ Gengarite
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Sludge Wave
- Taunt
- Shadow Ball / Hex
- Destiny Bond / Will-O-Wisp
This is Mega Gengar's most used set, taking advantage of its base 130 Speed stat, Shadow Tag, and the combination of Taunt and Destiny Bond to take down foes. Sludge Wave is Mega Gengar's main STAB move, dealing heavy damage to any Pokemon that doesn't resist it, particularly Fairy-type Pokemon such as Xerneas and Arceus-Fairy. Taunt is used to shut down defensive Pokemon such as Lugia and prevent Defog, recovery, and setup, as well as forcing the foe to directly damage it. Shadow Ball is Mega Gengar's main STAB attack, as its neutral coverage is fantastic and it deals solid damage to most offensive Pokemon. Hex is preferred if you are using Will-O-Wisp in the fourth moveslot or if Mega Gengar is used in a team that focuses on taking advantage of status, with Pokemon such as defensive Ho-Oh or Zygarde-C. Destiny Bond allows Mega Gengar to force trades with a number of offensive and defensive threats alike, and it works even better in tandem with Taunt. Will-O-Wisp cripples opposing Pokemon, boosts Hex's power, and neuters Pursuit users such as Alolan Muk and Tyranitar. Mega Gengar can also run Focus Blast to hit Arceus-Dark, Arceus-Rock, Tyranitar, and Ferrothorn harder. 252 EVs in Speed allow Mega Gengar to tie with other base 130s and outspeed everything below, and 252 EVs in Special Attack maximize its damage output.
Mega Gengar can also run other sets, such as Substitute + 3 attacks, which can pack options such as Icy Wind, Disable, and Thunder. The other option is the Perish Trapper set, which is more reliable when it comes to remove a key threat or against more defensive teams that can't immediately threaten Mega Gengar but lacks offensive presence.
