Horror Movies

I can make a reasonable bet that none of you know someone that loves horror movies as much as I do. Unfortunately, horror has sucked ass since Insidious (and even then, only the first half was good), so when Cabin in the Woods started getting incredible reviews...I had to see it.

And it might be my favorite modern horror film of all time and ranks among horror period, and its only even half horror!

To anyone that loves horror like I do, you are doing a disservice to yourself if you don't see it. The references to classic horror film are tremendously wonderful.

I wanted this topic to discuss horror film in general, but since CitW is the most recent good film, I thought that should be the opening conversation. So, discuss the greatest genre in all of cinema!

insidious was awful. was ok until it got to the demons.

Some horror films I watched within the last few days
The Burning
Audition
All About Evil
Feast

I thought they were all pretty good, would recommend a watchthrough on any of them. I absolutely love the horror genre although I agree that most of it's been pretty bad lately, although The Woman in Black was decent. I would need to see what other horror films came out lately but they all were pretty forgettable iirc.

Man, the only type of horror movies I watch are those really less-than B-grade flicks that show up on MST3K or profane comedy/horror films like Teeth, Feast, Slither ... etc

The only 'legitimate' horror film that I like can bring up to mind is Blair Witch Project, which if you think about it really is a modern day creepypasta

I've been meaning to watch Cabin in the Woods and I didn't get a chance this weekend (8 page lit essay -_-) but I've been extremely excited for it and I'm glad to hear it's as great as the reviews make it out to be. I love Joss Whedon's work - I'm a Firefly/Serenity fan, and I'm very eager to watch The Avengers.

As for other horror films, I personally can't recommend very many. Audition was good, as kd24 said, as was The Blair Witch Project.

No offense but I thought The Blair Witch Project was completely lame. There are much better unsettling films out there and this one doesn't have much substance to it.

If you like horror, Cabin in the Woods cant be missed. It just cant.

And Yes, I mentioned in my post that only the first half of Insidious was good lol.

AUDITION! God, if there's ever a horror film that just makes you cringe in fright at the madness of a person, it's that. Idiot teenagers think Jigsaw is crazy? Fuck that whit, the scary ass Asian lady on Audition is where it's at.

I was on a horror fling last night me and my friends watched The Strangers and The Woman in Black because we didn't want to spend the money to go see A Cabin in the Woods. We were considering watching A Siberian Film but it was to gross to watch with girls lol. Anyways, I just recently caught the horror bug after I saw SAW....around 2 years ago. If it was before that I might have been to freaked out.

I saw Silent House in theaters; it was a great psychological thriller. The plot twist at the end really brought the movie together. The suspense was well implemented even with the continuous take, no cuts, nothing.

Outside of that the SAW movies have been relatively entertaining, I liked the first one quite a bit. I also enjoy horror video games; if anyone has played Amnesia: The Dark Descent or the Penumbra series then you will know what I am talking about. My friend has been playing some Silent Hill, I don't remember which one, but the plot is very interesting even with out the high scare factor.

i really disliked silent house

yo a serbian film is really more artsy than anything else. the wikipedia page makes it far far worse than it truly is. august underground and all of the real torture porn films are a lot worse. a lot.

The Shining, Psycho, Vertigo, Evil Dead 1/2/Army of Darkness, all must sees. Woman in Black wasn't too bad, I can't wait to see the Cabin in the Woods.

The Shining is the greatest horror of all time , hands down. Psycho a close second. Just so were clear :p

I know a woman who has three degrees focusing on horror movies, and who has a three year old child who thinks crashing a car and dying is no big deal because then she and her mum and her dad can all be zombies.

I'll be the old guy and say the movie itself, standing alone, is not very incredible. But when it first came out, it was special. The way they used the fledgling internet to create a frenzy for the movie had never been seen, and then the movie itself was so fascinating in the way it was filmed. Just a great idea.

As for "horror", I differentiate between horror and suspense. I love suspenseful movies and really don't enjoy horror. I love being scared, but I don't need to see someone rip a key out of their friends stomach or something stupid like that to be scared. Gore has gotten so over the top these days, I don't want to be grossed out.

My recent favorite is a Korean movie called A Tale of Two Sisters. It was remade (naturally) in America as The Uninvited, which is pisspoor in comparison.

I would suggest REC/Quarantine. It's shot like The Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield(btw, amazing film. Don't care what anyone says), etc, but it's zombies/mutant things. Quarantine is actually the American adaptation of the Spanish film REC, and it actually stays true to the Spanish film(I would watch both). They actually do have a sequel; REC2 starts right after the events of the first film, but Q2 is totally different. Q2 is shot traditionally and you think it's going to be one of those crappy sequels, but I thought it was ok. It's nowhere as good as the others, but if you have nothing else to do, than give it a shot. [REC] Genesis(REC3) is coming later this year and a prequel to the first is to co,e, which I'm very excited for, but I hope America just leaves them alone. They did good on the first one, was lucky on the second, so lets not take any chances.

Cabin in the Woods currently has a 92% positive rating on Rottentomatoes......holy crap! I don't read reviews for movies since most of them are crap nowadays, but that high of rating is just unheard of for horror movies in this day.

Don't watch Quarantine. It's infinitely inferior to [REC].
Someone mentioned August Underground lol that shit is so stupid. You don't even know what's going on 90% of the time.

I haven't seen A Serbian Film yet. It doesn't really seem like its worth a watch, as everyone says its just disgusting rape and shit.

Mostly an exploitation buff, but The House on the Edge of the Park is my favorite horror film of all time. It's not really scary by the usual ghost/monster kind of thing, but scary from a human nature perspective. The ending has such a twist, it'll leave you questioning morality for a while >.>

Side note: Ruggero Deodato (the man behind Cannibal Holocaust) considers this the most fucked up film he ever directed. Not for the faint of heart...

Some horror/suspense films I have really liked and watched recently:

The Orphanage (not 'The Orphan', although that was alright)
The Cabin in the Woods
The Birds
Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door
Scooby Doo: Camp Scare (The opening is fucking terrifying.)

Also I have to disagree with you Stone Cold. For me Psycho > The Shining.

Well if you had to pick between the two, than yeah [REC] is much better. But Quarantine is still a pretty good American adaptation of it.

Also I would recommend Cannibal Holocaust, but it has intense violence, sexual assault, and animal cruelty. If you are sensitive towards animals DO NOT WATCH IT, just don't. It's actually a really good film, but I will never watch it again.

THE_IRON_...KENYAN?

Banned deucer.
Man, how has no one mentioned John Carpenter's The Thing? Great movie, got bad reviews, but definitely creeped me the fuck out.

The main gripe against it was the lack of consistency and quality of the story, but im willing to assume that most people watching a horror movie dont exactly look for that kinda stuff anyway

I don't even like talking about 'The Uninvited' to be honest.

But 'A Tale of Two Sisters' is an amazing film. I have watched a lot of horror films. While it may not be the most horrifying. The plot is amazing. Not only that it is a visually stunning film. The camera work is great, along with the coloring. It is honestly one of the most gorgeous films I have ever seen.

I watch a ton of Horror movies, but mostly because I can have a good laugh, really :D
none of the movies is really that scary I suppose, but hye, its all in good fun :)

Zombie movies have my preference, but the japanese can hold their own I think, oftentimes they make better horror then western filmmakers imo.

Dawn of the Dead 2004 was really nice, I dont know how many times ive seen it but definatly one of my favourites.

I do love horror books/movies, but they freak me out so much, zombies/mutants in particular. I'll constantly be lying in bed with percieved monsters all around me. I can usually handle psych horror. :\

Some of my faves are The Wicker Man (terribly underrated), SAW I, The Ring, The Sixth Sense, and Cloverfield (JJ Abrams is best director).

You appear to have mainstreamitis. While those films are quite good (The Ring and Cloverfield mostly), you should try lesser known stuff if you want to be truly scared. The Blair Witch Project, while still mainstream, combines that ghostly feel and the style of Cloverfield. I bet you'd enjoy it (and you'll probably be freaked out!)

Tale of Two Sister is soooo good. But, not really a horror movie?

I have yet to see Cabin, but I've heard rave reviews, so I'm psyched.

I don't watch horror movies because I very rarely see one that I enjoy or even respect as a well-made movie. I did see Zombie Honeymoon (which was shit). I wouldn't really consider movies like Dawn of the Dead to be horror, but if they are I suppose those are the only ones I enjoy

Dawn of the Dead is incredibly horrific! Its also the best zombie movie of all time imo
