Though Ho-Oh is mostly valued on balanced teams due to its compression of roles as a pivot with Regenerator and an offensive and defensive check to threats like Primal Groudon and Necrozma-DM, Choice Scarf can be run to allow Ho-Oh to fulfill different roles. With Choice Scarf, Ho-Oh can outspeed and KO faster threats like Deoxys-A and Marshadow, which can otherwise be nuisances to common teams that Ho-Oh fits on. It also pairs well with entry hazard users like Primal Groudon and Ferrothorn that can harass Defog users with Toxic for its ability to outspeed and 2HKO weakened Mega Salamence and Arceus-Water. As Choice Scarf Ho-Oh is less reliable as a check to mixed Rock Polish Primal Groudon and Stealth Rock users like Arceus-Ground and Arceus-Fairy, additional entry hazard removers like support Arceus formes, Mega Salamence, and Giratina-O can be used to prevent Stealth Rock, perform as additional checks to Primal Groudon, and spread status.
