Flygon is a threatening setup sweeper in the RU metagame with great STAB types and coverage options such as Fire Punch and Iron Tail. It is able to easily find setup opportunities via forcing Pokemon like Gigalith and Registeel out or by making use of its great typing, which gives it immunities to Ground and Electric as well as resistances to Fire and Rock, allowing it to set up on Salazzle lacking Hidden Power Ice, Gligar, and Choice-locked Pokemon. It can also perform as a revenge killer with a Choice Scarf due to its great Speed tier, which lets it outspeed almost the entire metagame.
Flygon @ Dragonium Z / Groundium Z
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant / Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Earthquake
- Outrage
- Iron Tail
The set is pretty straightforward. Iron Tail lets Flygon muscle through Pokemon that can handle its STAB attacks such as Gardevoir (which can Trace Flygon's Levitate) and Whimsicott. Devastating Drake allows Flygon to break through Ground-resistant Pokemon like Chesnaught without having to lock itself into Outrage, which would leave it open to revenge killing. However, Groundium Z can be used to deal more damage to Pokemon like Escavalier and Durant and hit Fairy-types hard without relying on Iron Tail's low accuracy. Adamant is preferred because the power increase is more valuable than being able to outspeed Roserade and Moltres (and Speed tie with opposing Jolly Flygon), but a Jolly nature can still be used. Although Flygon can set up with ease on resisted hits or forced switches, it's recommended to bring it in without taking unnecessary damage via a partner's U-turn or Volt Switch.
Flygon is one of the best Pokemon in RU, but it has its flaws. Although it has decent stats overall, its defenses don't allow it to take many hits, even resisted ones. Also, Flygon's offensive power is lacking when unboosted, making it unable to easily KO some Pokemon. Its quadruple weakness to Ice also makes it prone to being revenge killed by Ice Shard from Pokemon like Mega Abomasnow and Mega Glalie, and it can't set up on defensive Pokemon that carry Ice-type coverage—for example, Ice Punch Rhyperior.
