Note: Below are the proposed update for our current Gen 6 EV horde training guide. The changes are in red, plus the ORAS hide tag.

Introduction

Hordes are a new type of battle introduced in Pokémon X and Y. These battles force the trainer to confront five wild Pokémon at a time instead of the usual one. Often, horde battles will contain five of the same Pokémon; however, there are certain areas which feature horde battles containing multiple species. While these battles can prove challenging during the main story, they serve as a quick means of EV training Pokémon in the post-game.

Horde Tips

  • Use Sweet Scent or Honey to initiate a horde battle while standing in tall grass.
  • Sweet Scent and Honey will fail if used on a route in which it is raining in Pokemon X and Y. However, both will work during the weather in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
  • Use a powerful spread move like Petal Blizzard or Surf to KO all five Pokémon at the same time!
  • You gain EVs and experience for all five horde Pokémon defeated in battle.
EV Training Tips

  • A Pokémon gains EVs when it gains experience.
  • To wipe a Pokémon's EVs, use a Reset Bag from Super Training, or a Perilous Soup made from a Kee and Maranga berry in the Juice Shoppe (X/Y only).
  • Using a Reset Bag will completely reset a Pokemon's EVs, indicating how many EVs were lost in a stat in the progress. This allows you to check if you performed the training correctly. Make sure to save beforehand so you don’t lose your work!
  • EV reducing berries can be used in a pinch to decrease EVs in a stat by 10. They are the Pomeg, Kelpsy, Qualot, Hondew, Grepa, and Tamato Berries for HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed, respectively.
  • Pokérus doubles the number of EVs your Pokémon gains in battle.
  • Macho Brace doubles the number of EVs your Pokémon gains in battle (stacks with Pokerus).
  • Power Items (Brace, Anklet, etc.) grant an additional 4 EVs in a specific stat per Pokémon defeated.
  • With Exp. Share ON, the entire party gains EVs.
Horde EV Math

You can calculate how many EVs you will gain from a horde battle by using the following formula:

EVs = (Total_Horde_EVs + 20 A)*B*C

  • Total_Horde_EVs = EVs found on the far right of the tables below
  • A = Power Item Stat (Not equipped = 0, Weight = HP, Bracer = Atk, Belt = Def, Lens = SpA, Band = SpD, Anklet = Spe)
  • B = Pokérus (Not infected = 1, Infected = 2)
  • C = Macho Brace (Not equipped = 1, Equipped = 2)
Example: A Pokémon with Pokérus defeats a Gulpin horde while holding a Power Weight.

EVs = (5 HP + 20 HP)*2*1

EVs = (25 HP)*2

EVs = 50 HP

The information seems a little all over the place. If there's "best" places for training certain stats, why bother even listing the other places? If being comprehensive is something we want, then why not section the whole list off under headings, like all the places for HP in one section, another for Atk etc... But I find people only care about where the single-best places to train are, not every single one.

Rusturf Tunnel is listed twice btw

Good spy, thanks! Those are actually all correct in the original guide (and my html), I just transcribed it wrong here lol. Oh the joys of keeping different docs. Fixed! :)

Fixed, thanks!

Not the original author, so I can't speak for the designed intent (though I'd tend to agree with you--people only really care about the best). What I gathered is the order is based on the order you encounter the routes in the game, which I tried to emulate in the ORAS section. Xenforo doesn't really allow me to show it easily, but the current guide has links along the top for the best and "second best" routes for training. When I put "Best HP" or whatever, I'm trying to say that will be linked as such along the top.

If I had to provide justification for the current setup, I'd say that people have their preferred routes, even if they're not the best (i.e. to each their own). Listing all provides a way for them to choose, a comprehensive list of the hordes for the site (which we don't really have anywhere else afaik), and the option to EV train no matter how far they are in the game. Listing them (roughly) in order of appearance eliminates any subjectivity over organization, such as "Route X is better put in the Y section imo because Z."

With that said, if consensus is a reorganization/condensation I'd be happy to oblige. Personally, I too would have gone with an organization such as what you suggested if I were to start over, but I was just trying to update ;) Not sure how much of that was apparent when you made your comment, or if it changes anything, so I'll await feedback.

Thanks for the thoughts!

edit:

I'm on my phone atm, but I've notices that another mon is wrong that I didn't catch, in Frost Cavern it should be Vanillite instead of Vanillish

Like cant say, I would agree that most people really only want to read the one best spot for a specific stat, so it would be useful for them if there was such list made obvious before the exhaustive list (which most people probably don't want to go through).

However, this is clearly a problem that was there with the original article. If the goal is not to revamp the article entirely but rather just to update it with the ORAS information, then I think it's a job well done! :blobthumbsup:

cant say Eisenherz I've reorganized a bit to make the list of best locations a more pronounced. Right now I think I'll nix the links along the top for the best and alternate locations, and instead make a new section for the best routes. I've uploaded an image to the OP so you can see what I'm talking about (just imagine the sprites in there in between the route and XX EVs). The route names link to the full route information later on in the article. I think I'll keep the list of all the routes in there since it's there if they want it, and tbh that was a lot of work :P

But I'm still open to suggestions. Thanks!

That looks really good (except for the Times New Roman ewwwww)! Exactly what it needed in my opinion, and leaving the whole thing at the end is definitely a good thing, the more information the better. I have no more suggestions! :P
