EonX was last seen July 22nd, and has been removed from council for frequent periods of infrequent activity. We'd like to thank him for all the hard work he put in to the RU forum throughout the course of this generation.

On a different note, Ubers Tier Leader (&), PS! admin (&), and Smogon SMod (&) Sweep has been added to the council, as he frequently plays the meta and loses mirror matches to me! Congrats sweep n_n.

-Tsunami- has been removed from RU council due to inactivity. As the only member of the RU council aside from me and Molk to be on council continuously since the beginning of XY RU, we'd like to sincerely thank him for his time on the council and his contributions to the tier. I offer you all a "bop, thele it is" in his honor.

Noivern and Reuniclus banned from RU, reasoning below

Noivern Reasoning said:
Noivern is being suspected because of the huge strain it puts on team building for any offensively oriented team. Due to its nice base speed of 123 alongside its high base power STAB moves, good coverage, and even support options, Noivern can be quite troubling for offensive teams to deal with. The high base power of it's STAB moves (Hurricane and Draco Meteor) alongside Flamethrower coverage make switching into Noivern almost impossible for offensively oriented teams, as, barring SR Piloswine, NP Togetic, and AV Meloetta, few other Pokemon on offensive teams can reliably avoid a 2HKO and threaten Noivern back. Infiltrator is also a great ability for Noivern, allowing it to revenge kill Pokemon even behind a sub, such as Sub SD Cobalion, or Sub Durant. On top of this, Noivern is still able to function well against defensive teams, as it has access to Taunt, Superfang, and Infiltrator Switcheroo (with choice specs), which can screw over defensive Pokemon thinking that they can comfortably wall Noivern. Roost is also useful against teams that attempt to deal with Noivern too passively, as it can simply roost off the minor damage and threaten the opponents team later. For all of these reasons, Noivern has been deemed worthy of a suspect test in RU.
Reuniclus Reasoning said:
While Reuniclus may seem like a strange choice to suspect as it has been in the meta since its inception, Reuniclus has actually been brought up at several different points throughout XY and ORAS RU as a potential suspect, but the timing was never right as tier shifts or some other threat popping up always got in the way. The set that has, at times, been worthy of a suspect test is the Calm Mind set, which is extremely profficient at dismantling defensive teams once the dedicated counter to reuniclus has been removed or weakened (and sometimes even without this). Often times the counters that defensive teams carry to deal with Reuniclus, such as Drapion and Skuntank, are easily taken care of by Dugtrio. With Doublade's exit from the tier, Reuniclus doesn't really need to run Shadow Ball anymore, it can run Focus Blast to deal with Dark-types like Houndoom and the aforementioned Drapion and Skuntank, or if you are concerned with Spiritomb, Reuniclus can easily get away with running Signal Beam, which hits Spiritomb and the other Dark-types neutrally, at the small cost of having trouble with Steel-types that can also set up. Magic Gaurd is what makes Reuniclus so potent, as it cannot be dealt with by status, unlike other set up sweepers, it also makes it extremely resiliant, as it doesn't take damage from hazards. Reuniclus still serves as a good win condition against offensively oriented teams, as barring strong Dark-type Physical attackers (and Houndoom), and a select few very powerful wall breakers, Reuniclus becomes basically unpenetrable after a few calm mind boosts. OTR is also an option that can take advantage of the fact that Reuniclus isn't often thought of as hitting hard right off the bat, but OTR flips speed on its head and allows Reuniclus to easily clean faster teams, given its extremely high Special Attack and recoil-less Life Orb boost. Because of the recent tier shifts, as well as its long standing position as one of the best and threatening bulky set up sweepers in the tier, Reuniclus has been deemed worthy of a suspect test.

Venomoth Banned from RU, Reasoning Below

Venomoth Reasoning said:
Venomoth is being put up for suspect due to its outstanding potential as a setup sweeper. With base 90 Speed, decent defensive typing, and access to Sleep Powder, Venomoth finds several opportunities to attain a Quiver Dance boost. On top of this, Venomoth is an extremely effective sweeper after a single Quiver Dance, thanks to Tinted Lens giving itnear unresisted coverage in just one STAB move, Bug Buzz, making it significantly more difficult to check than other boosting sweepers, and the Speed boost makes it very hard to revenge kill outside of specific Choice Scarf users such as Delphox and Durant or Fletchinder's priority Acrobatics. Due to STAB Bug Buzz deterring Grass-types from switching in, there are few Pokemon capable of absorbing Venomoth's Sleep Powder, which doesn't just make it easier for Venomoth to find opportunites to sweep itself, but makes it exceptionally easy for Venomoth to support teammates with similar checks. On top of all of this, Venomoth is a very customizable sweeper; in the 4th slot, it is capable of running additional coverage moves such as Sludge Bomb, giving it perfect neutral coverage in conjunction with Tinted Lens, Giga Drain, or even Roost, which allows it to easily set up against defensive teams. While Venomoth's poor defensive stats may make it seem manageable, stopping it is a lot more difficult than it looks thanks to Sleep Powder granting free turns for set up, Quiver Dance boosting both SpD and Speed, and Venomoth's immunity to Toxic.

Tyrantrum Remains RU in a 47-48 vote

Tyrantrum Suspect Reasoning said:
Tyrantrum is being suspected primarily due to its extremely hard hitting STAB moves. For offensive teams, it is very hard to find a rock resist sturdy enough to switch in and take two Head Smashes from Scarf Tyrantrum, this is exacerbated by the fact that the Steel-types which most easily fit onto offense does not resist Rock-type moves in the first place. Because of this, offensive teams are limited quite a bit in this metagame, and are often forced into running a slower, more defensive Pokemon, which can be a huge momentum drain that heavy offense teams can't afford. While Tyrantrum has the most influence on offensive teams, it is not dead weight against defensive teams either, simply due to the extremely high BP of its STAB moves. Common defensive steel types lack reliable recovery, so Tyrantrum's presence can easily lead to them being overwhelmed.

Abomasite and Sharpedo banned from RU, reasoning below

Abomasite Reasoning said:
Mega Abomasnow is an extremely influential pokemon in the ORAS RU metagame that single-handedly limits the form many teams are able to take by requiring them to run specific archetypes or a handful of Pokemon in order to not be succumb to its raw offensive prowess. The main set that allows Mega Abomasnow to do this and what makes it suspect-worthy in RU is a mixed offensive set consisting of Blizzard / Ice Shard / Grass STAB / Coverage. This set allows Abomasnow to apply strong pressure to defensive cores, as good switch-ins to this set are limited in number, generally lack recovery, or must be wary of certain coverage moves. It remains effective (though less so) against offensive teams, due to STAB Ice Shard and the ability to boost its priority move with Swords Dance. This set gives it an additional layer of versatility that makes the few specially bulky Pokemon capable of switching in on the mixed set weary of taking a strong physical hit prior to knowing which of the two sets it's running. Whichever set it chooses, high base power STABs make Mega Abomasnow capable of breaking through frailer offensive resists, which it can get the chance to do by switching in on and then forcing out Water- and certain Electric-types or use its good bulk to withstand various neutral hits to unleash an attack in return.
Sharpedo Reasoning said:
Sharpedo's combination of speed and power allow it to double up as an unmatched hybrid sweeper and wallbreaker. With excellent coverage in its STABs and access to Speed Boost, it's capable of 2HKOing every offensive Pokemon at worst while being difficult to revenge kill and tricky to wall. Hydro Pump / Dark pulse / Ice Beam / Protect is Sharpedo's strongest set and what allows Sharpedo to cleave through many offensive teams in RU, forcing them to rely on shaky checks that are easily worn down or beaten by its other sets or mandating the use of a handful of priortity users incapable of switching in. Sharpedo is almost as good as a wallbreaker as it is a sweeper, as its special STAB combination in tandem with Ice Beam leaves it with few reliable defensive checks. These are limited to Poliwrath and Alomomola, the former of which can still lose to Zen Headbutt that Sharpedo is more than capable of employing on less threatening, but still effective physical sets. Sharpedo is also capable of running said physical sets with Aqua Jet in order to bypass priority such as Fletchinder's Acrobatics. Lastly, because of Speed Boost, Sharpedo synergizes with Baton Pass by being a powerful recipient with limited checks capable of putting a boosted Sharpedo to a halt.

Durant banned from RU, reasoning below

Durant Suspect Reasoning said:
Durant is an incredibly influential pokemon in the current RU meta game. It's scarf set can be quite difficult for offensive builds to account for, while Life Orb or Choice Band sets are capable of tearing into more balanced and defensive teams, while still being threatening to offensive teams thanks to its naturally high base speed. While Durant is vulnerable to certain bulky water and fire types, it has means of playing around these checks without giving up too much flexibility, either by choosing certain coverage moves or using Subpass or Hone Claws. Durant's good physical bulk and defensive typing also benefit Durant against opposing offensive teams, as it gets opportunities to fire off powerful STAB attacks after switching into opposing Ice types and is difficult to wear down with priority.

May 17th, 2016, Honchkrow quickbanned from RU.

Honchkrow was banned for its ability to harry offensive teams with Moxie-boosted Sucker Punches, while having the power and coverage options to rip through many defensive cores. Honchkrow was also capable of running Pursuit so that it can pick off weakened foes and interfere with the opposing team's attempts to stop it from getting a Moxie boost. Furthermore, Honchkrow's various coverage moves meant that only heavily physically bulky Alomomola or Rhyperior could switch in and reliably check it, while other defensive checks, such as Diancie, Registeel, and Mawile, were at the mercy of whichever coverage moves it chose to run, whereas offensive checks, primarily faster Sucker Punch resists, were incapable of stomaching a Brave Bird. Honchkrow's incredible power and Moxie also imposed an unhealthy amount of mind games with Sucker Punch / Pursuit / Brave Bird, turning many matches into guessing games due to the reward for the Honchkrow user being so immense if they guessed correctly.

Tyrantrum and Steelixite banned from RU, reasoning below:

Tyrantrum was banned due to its extremely hard hitting STAB moves. For offensive teams, it is very hard to find a rock resist sturdy enough to switch in and take two Head Smashes from Scarf Tyrantrum, this is exacerbated by the fact that the best steel types are not easy to fit onto purely offensive teams. Because of this, offensive teams are limited quite a bit in this metagame, and are often forced into running a slower, more defensive Pokemon, which can be a huge momentum drain that heavy offense teams can't afford. While Tyrantrum has the most influence on offensive teams, it is not dead weight against defensive teams either, simply due to the extremely high BP of its STAB moves, especially if it uses Choice Band. Common defensive steel types lack reliable recovery, so Tyrantrum's presence can easily lead to them being overwhelmed.
Mega Steelix was banned due to the extremely centralizing effect it has on teambuilding in the current RU meta game. Mega Steelix is capable of fitting onto every team from stall to bulky offense, due to its great offensive and defensive presence. Its amazing natural bulk and high base power STAB moves have an extremely limiting effect on the possible team compositions in RU. Several Pokemon, which are otherwise proficient in the RU meta game, become difficult to use given the ubiquity and effectiveness of Mega Steelix in the RU meta game.

August 9th, 2016, we did a thing (Shaymin and Slurpuff unanimously quickbanned by RU council)

Simply put Shaymin is too much for RU. Due to STAB Seed Flare's ability to force switches coupled with solid coverage moves capable of hitting pretty much anything that you would switch into Shaymin, Shaymin is the premier wallbreaker in the tier. Additionally Shaymin can run Leech Seed in order to deal with Registeel, the only Pokemon that is capable of hard countering offensive Shaymin. Outside of Shaymin's wallbreaking prowess, Shaymin sits at a high (for RU) speed tier of 100, which when coupled with its 100/100/100 base defenses makes it incredibly hard to deal with offensively as you would with other wallbreakers. On top of all this, the combination of Synthesis and Natural Cure means that you aren't even capable of wearing Shaymin down with smart switches and Status. Basically Shaymin is the most threatening offensive mon in the tier while also being fast and bulky.

After a single Belly Drum there are an extremely limited number of Pokemon in RU that are capable of taking a hit from Slurpuff. Slurpuff also outspeeds all unboosted Pokemon and most Scarfers after the Unburden boost. All of these Pokemon are extremely easy to wear down and lack reliable recovery. Meanwhile, Slurpuff's fairy typing and adequate defensive stats give it plenty of opportunities to pull off a Belly Drum. It is extremely easy to get Slurpuff into a position in which it wins the game while it is very difficult to play a game in which your opponent does not get an opportunity to set up a Belly Drum and win.

Alomomola Remains RU in a 16-21 Vote
Alomomola's high HP stat, Regenerator, and access to Wish allows it to excel at supporting its team. It gets plenty of opportunities to switch in with its bulk and pass a Wish that will heal a large portion of its teammate's health. Its bulk allows it to shrug off many neutral hits, and when combined with Regenerator and Protect, Alomomola functions as a proficient pivot in RU, able to switch into attacks, scout moves, and switch out while recovering back damage. This makes Alomomola effective against many choiced attackers. Alomomola also has an arguably strong matchup versus offensive teams as Alomomola can sap their momentum by making use of its unique host of supportive and defensive characteristics. Because of Regenerator providing it with alternative methods of healing, it does not need to use turns healing itself with Wish very often. Although it may be passive and is weak to top tier threats such as Venusaur, it is usually paired with Pokemon that mitigate its flaws and benefit from its Wish-Passing.

Dugtrio Banned from RU in a 36-3 Vote
Dugtrio was banned due to its ability to dispose of a number of offensive and defensive Pokemon, notably Registeel, Diancie, Virizion, and Magneton, which dilutes their viability and narrows the number of reliable options that can be used to counteract defensive builds and offensive combinations created by it. Dugtrio's ability to remove anti-defensive Pokemon magnifies the power of bulky teams by limiting the number of consistent wallbreakers and allows such teams to focus on countering offensive threats that are not susceptible to trapping; inversely, it creates powerful offensive cores due to the fact that it can eliminate grounded-checks for Pokemon such as Braviary and Venusaur, both of which are otherwise held down by a handful of Pokemon. Dugtrio isn't limited to trapping Pokemon specifically weak to its Earthquake though, as it is more than capable of picking off slightly weakened offensive threats such as Life Orb Venusaur, Meloetta, and Escavalier, and it has the potential to generate free set up turns with Memento for offensive teammates, further cementing its proficiency as a trapper and support 'mon.

Hey guys, due to his long streak of inactivity Senior Staff has decided to remove Molk from his position as RU Tier Leader. While he wasn't very active at the end of Gen 6, I would like to genuinely thank him for his hard work and great leadership during XY RU and early ORAS RU.

Moving forward, for the time being I will be leading the tier by myself until I, and the rest of SS, feel that someone else is ready to step into this position.
