Online Competition Weakness Cup [playable on Showdown!]

People are talking about Terrakion, and yet are not Pokemon that are brought up through the transporter illegal?
To clarify further, this competition is not restricted to pokemon from the Alola region, so pokemon brought up through PokeBank and Transporter are legal to use.

I really like this format but I am quite bad at it. Any tips on how I could improve?

Also, Ninjask is nice for killing Weavile :D How do you all deal with Weavile?

I love these weird formats as they force me to breed things that I would otherwise never get around to breeding. I'm not gonna bother testing, I like just going in blind and seeing what happens. It's basically Weakness Policy Rock Polish Terrakion in sand (to help survive random grass/water moves) and random other stuff

Tyranitar @ Passho Berry
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature

Starmie @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Yanmega @ Occa Berry
Ability: Speed Boost

I don't really know what I'm doing for most of my picks. Starmie is straight up worse than Greninja, but I'm gonna wait til Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon and see what tutors are out before I start working on breeding Greninja. Psyshock is basically just for Terrak in Sand which I'm sure noone outside of myself is using so I'm essentially only countering myself. Dunno what to do with Yanmega. Maybe Charti is better than Occa since Yanmega is not bad defensively and might actually take a rock hit after Charti. Psychic is a placeholder. I think Swagger on a speed boost mon is filthy so I might go with that. Maybe Chandelure should have Charti/Pasho, since I'm really not scared of opposing Chandy with my team

I dunno... I really like the idea of giving Terrak a Weakness Policy on a team that looks like Ttar really should be carrying it.

You have Psyshock, Psychic and Earth Power on your sets, yet what threats do those moves cover? They are wasted move slots. There's literally no steel types or poison types or fighting types (water and grass is enough for Terrakion). Chandelure is the only fire type I can think of yet you already have dark pulse on the same set.

I just don't see those moves doing anything. Flash Cannon is better on Hydreigon for Whimsicott and Togekiss and rock types. Even Fire Blast is better. And as for Starmie, well I've been testing Dazzling Gleam. Weird yes but at least it hits something like Weavile, Guzzlord and Hydreigon.

I usually love trying to build anti-meta, but after laddering for a while it seems like I'm severely nerfing myself by not using Whimsicott. Prankster Tailwind/Taunt/Encore just seem like a flawless opener, anyone having any luck facing it as a lead? I did just get beaten by a mean physical-Acrobatics Greninja that might do the trick...

Double target it with Fake Out and a second strong attack (e.g. Poison Jab) just to get rid of it straight away and prevent it from setting up Tailwind. Often the other opposing Pokémon uses Protect anyway, so it usually works out well.

Does anyone who already played some matches is this mode has an idea which coverage moves to use on Protean Greninja? Was thinking about a Set with Ice Beam/ Hydro Pump/ Dark Pulse/ Protect

e: I´m also thinking on which berry to take on this mon, any ideas? It´s somehow hard cuz it can change it´s typing with the ability

Is Blizzard on Greninja worth over Ice Beam? I've tried some battles and had mixed results (very good or very bad). Should i use Ice beam instead?
I also was thinking a Hail team since there are so many ice weak mons

You could use a chople berry for your set, as dark and ice types are weak to fighting moves.

I wouldn't dismiss running a physically-based mixed set though. In this tournament, Greninja can be decent, but it's power can be lacking at times. However, if you forgo a held item, Greninja can use Acrobatics, a move that will have the same power as Hydro Pump, but will also have 100% accuracy. The only Pokémon that resist Acrobatics in this tournament are Rock and Ground Pokémon, and Greninja can run moves for those Pokémon. I was thinking a set like this:

Greninja w/ (no item)
Ability: Protean
EVs: 252 Atk, 252 Spe, 4 Spa
Naive nature
- Acrobatics
- Low Kick
- Hydro Pump
- Protect / Mat Block

A lot of Pokémon in this tournament are weak to flying moves, and Acrobatics hits most of those Pokemon for great amounts of damage. Low kick compliments Acrobatics, notably getting a OHKO on Terrakion and Tyranitar. Hydro Pump, while not always accurate, hits many Pokémon that resist Acrobatics for good amounts of damage, and also OHKOs Chandelure (with no bulk investment). Protect and Mat Block are good moves in doubles, and either move is a decent option.

Greninja can't have a power-boosting item in this tournament (not counting weakness policy, which isn't viable for it), so tried to focus on giving it moves that would make up for the power loss. Moves like Dark Pulse and Ice Beam are good normally with a Life Orb, but how good are they without the orb?

Is Blizzard on Greninja worth over Ice Beam? I've tried some battles and had mixed results (very good or very bad). Should i use Ice beam instead?
I also was thinking a Hail team since there are so many ice weak mons
A Hail team could be decent; the only Pokémon that resist Ice are Water and Fire types, which can be covered in some way. Just account for Wide Guard users and Sand setters, and you should be good to go. I wouldn't use Blizzard outside of Hail though, because of its sub optimial accuracy, and because Ice Beam slightly outdamages it against single targets.

Kommo-o wants Aura Sphere. What are the chances of Focus Miss hitting twice before Kommo-o gets knocked out? Add a Fairy type move to the equation. Kommo-o also has slightly better Attack.
Here are the chances: 7/10 x 7/10 = 0.49 This is the chance of connecting 2 Focus Blasts. 1-0.49 = 0.51 chance of missing at least one. So the odds are not in favor, but barley.

Welll there is Chesnaught, Dhelmise, Kommo-o, Palossand, Rhyperior, Slowbro, Tapu Bulu and Tyranitar. I might miss few so correct when I'm wrong.
Since we're on the topic of Special vs Physical Kommo-O, everyone please do note that Tyranitar still gets OHKOd by literaly almost every fighting move out there unless someone is stupid enough to run Chople over Weakness Policy, and Poison Jab still hits Bulu and Slowbro better than Focus Blast, Flamethrower and Flash Cannon do (as long as you SD up on Slowbro)

And do pokemon who have a good physical defense with 5 weaknesses exist?

The Pokémon in this tournament that has the most physical defense would be Regirock (at a whopping 200 base defense). There is also Nosepass (135 base defense), Golem(130), Tangrowth(125), Gigalith(130), Turantrum(119), and Gourgeist(122). You also could use Krookodile or Masquerain for Intimidate, which could boost the ability of your Pokémon to take physical hits.

I do think that it's funny that Nosepass has the second highest physical defense in this tournament; you would think that it would be on a 'better' Pokémon.

Been enjoying the meta shifts on the Showdown Ladder, though I'm a little worried I'll adjust so much to it that cartridge meta will catch me by surprise! My favorite teams I've been beaten by have been bulky, middling-speed mons with a Tailwind and Trick Room setter to constantly fight for speed control. Very impressive!

Trying to finish off my team and so far it is very physical.

I am doing a pretty basic Sand/TR team.

Gigalith - Sand Stresm
Tyranitar - Unnerve
Cacturne - Sand Veil
Golurk - Iron Fist
Lunatone/Solrock - Levitate

I'm leading towards Lunatone as my Trick Room setter. I'd really like to have a second setter on the team, Claydol fitting the team well. Sigilyph might be a good fit as well, but so was thinking the more TR users I add to the team the more it would scream TR.

Right now it does look like a common Sand Team.

I could always add Chandelure to look faster, but still set TR.

Any ideas? I would like to add a special attacker to the 6th slot, but in the sand I feel physical is the way to go. I also don't anticipate WoW or Intimidate being too rampant.

Krookodile most likely seeing more usage than Masquerain.

Pokémon with Iron Fist or Sheer Force might be more valuable for the extra damage.

My Cacturne and Golurk are from ORAS, so I have Drain Punch on both to hopefully benefit from the healing.

Yeah I hear ya. The players in the showdown and the cart is very different and the players in cart has different strategies to win. For me, it is best to battle more in cart because that's where the is.

Slowbro or Slowking could be viable options, since both have oblivious to protect from taunt. I tested Bruxish for TR, because Dazzling blocks Encore from Whimsicott. Togekiss could be helpful for setting up a TR.

I don't know if this is the right place to put teams. So if not please correct me and have a otter picture instead.

Whimsicott @ Coba Berry
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Timid Natur
IVs: 0 Atk
- Tailwind
- Memento
- Taunt
- Moonblast
It's main purpose is to set up tailwind since I really annoyed to fight pokemon like Aerodactyl and Greninja. Taunt stops other tailwind setters such as Togekiss and taunt foes' Whimsicott hoping it lands first because of speed tie. Since their are alot of dark types in this metagame, Moonblast is best for damaging the foes while it is still alive. When Whimsicott is almost to faint, there is Memento for weakening powerful mons and also takes out the weakness policy boost for pokemon like Tyranitar. Coba Berry for Whimsicott because I'm really cautious with aerodactyl with Sky Drop which my opponent can set up or faint my other pokemon.

Yanmega @ Occa Berry
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Air Slash
- Bug Buzz
- Detect
- Hidden Power [Ice]
I was really glad that Yanmega is part of this competition. First of, Yanmega has the amazing ability, Speed Boost. When it has +1 Speed, it outspeeds all pokemon in the metagame even Aerodactyl. With Occa Berry, it can withstand Heat Wave and Flamethrower of both Delphox and Chandelure (but not Chandelure's Overheat which it KOes Yanmega completely). Air Slash and Bug Buzz are both STABs for more power, Detect to stall time or scouts enemies, and HP Ice for Aerodactyl, Hydreigon, Kommo-o and the many grass types here in this metagame.

Chandelure @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Flamethrower
- Protect
- Shadow Ball
- Imprison / Will o Wisp / Sunny Day
Like Alolan Marowak in the VGC, Chandelure's role is to counter fire type moves with its ability Flash Fire since most of my team has fire weakness. With Colbur Berry, Chandelure can withstand Tyranitar's Crunch, Weavile's Night Slash and etc. Flamethrower over Fire Blast because I'm not a lucky guy and Shadow Ball for another STAB for Chandelure. I cant' decide on it's last move slot. I can wisp physical attackers and also disrupt pokemon with the weakness policy boost, Sunny Day so no more Sandstorm from Tyranitar and also Imprison, which I can stop my opponents from protecting.

Virizion @ Yache Berry
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Leaf Blade
- Stone Edge
- Protect
Virizion is my counter to heavy hitter Terrakion which can destroy my team without it. Yache Berry for ice type pokemon like Weavile and Mamoswine. With Justified, Virizion can get attack boosts with proper predictions. Close Combat and Leaf Blade as STAB.

Tyranitar @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Unnerve
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Jolly Nature
- Rock Polish
- Rock Slide
- Crunch
- Iron Head
For this team, my WP user is Tyranitar. Tyranitar has outstanding attack stat combining with great bulk, it is surely a main pick for a WP users in this metagame. With the ability Unnerve, all berries in the foe's area are not usable and all of them and KOes straight away with a super effective move. Rock Polish boosts its mediocre Speed stat to enough levels that can speed tie with Greninja. Rock Slide has a chance for flinching that may annoy the foe and Crunch, both have STAB. For Fairy and Ice types, Tyranitar punishes both with Iron Head.

I'm still not sure on my 6th slot because I don't know what is missing. I could put a TR abuser when my opponent has a Oblivious slowbro/king, Ribombee with Sweet Veil to avoid Breloom with Spore shenanigans or a Fake Out user to counter foe's Prankster Whimsicott.

Hey, short question to Hawlucha in this format cuz I never played the mon before in general:
What is the best fighting move for Hawlucha in his mode? I mean, High Jump Kick is the strongest, but isn´t that pretty risky cuz of the big usage of protect? So is Flying Press better in this format?

If you can get one from ORAS, Low Kick seems to be good enough if you dislike Protect gambles. Your top two targets, Tyranitar and Terrakion, give Low Kick maximum Base Power.

Otherwise, Fighting STAB is not appealing because of ghosts everywhere. Focus on its Flying STAB, which only has one effective resist in this cup (no Electric or Steel-types)

A few things:

For Yanmega, I don't think it needs hidden power ice, as it hits the majority of Pokémon harder with its stab moves. I would replace it with with Shadow Ball (to hit ghosts like Chandelure harder), or Tailwind (to have a backup Tailwind setter).

For Tyranitar, I would recommend a spread like this, should you want to keep it as a rock polish user:

Tyranitar w/ Weakness Policy
Adamant nature
EVs: 252 Atk, 156 Spe, 100 HP
Ability: Unnerve
- Rock Polish
- Rock Slide
- Crunch
- Low Kick / Iron Head

This spread allows Tyranitar to outspeed Aerodactyl after a Rock Polish boost while having as much initial power as possible. For the last move, I would recommend Low Kick (if you can get it) for coverage against Terrakion, Tyranitar, and Hydreigon. I know that Iron Head also hits Tyranitar and Terrakion hard, but Low Kick ensures those KOs, whereas Iron Head doesn't KO either Pokémon.

For your last spot, I might recommend Weavile. It gives you a Fake Out user, it probably has the best combo of speed and power in this tournament, and it's stab moves hit a lot of Pokémon hard in general (I believe it can KO every S rank Pokémon with its stab moves and Low kick, or at least deal some significant damage to them).

WIP/quick and dirty post for my WIP team:

Running out of time, so I'm planning to run with this.
Team is almost bred, and three only need to be modified.

Gojulas (Tyranitar) @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Unnerve
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Rock Slide
- Crunch
- Protect
The Hammer. I'm considering exchanging D-Dance for a coverage attack like Low Kick. Also considering Rock Polish, but I'm wondering if it might be redundant with Tailwind.

Cotta (Whimsicott) @ Kebia Berry
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Timid Nature
- Tailwind
- Encore
- Beat Up
- Energy Ball
The annoying pain in the f-ing ass, no matter how I use it. Whether it is setting up Tailwind, trapping an opponent into a set-up move or raising Terrakion's Attack to horrifying levels.

Terrick Booster (Terrakion) @ Passho Berry
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Sacred Sword
- Rock Slide
- Poison Jab
- Protect
The Dagger. If you don't have anything to deal with him, he will rip your team to shreds. If you do, I will send out the members of the team that can deal with Whimsicott and Terrakion. Or maybe I'll guess you know that, and send out Terrick and Cotta. That is pretty much this team's strategy.

Rascal (Weavile) @ Occa Berry
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Low Kick
- Beat Up
- Icicle Crash
- Protect
Good for dealing with unwanted Whimsicotts or Greninjas. I'm surprised how often I've caught the latter by surprise with a Low Kick to the knee or groin. Beat Up is for raising Terrakion's attack if Whimiscott is taken out early. I'm considering replacing it with Night Slash to avoid dependency on Terra-Cotta however. On the other hand, a berry only activates once...

Kermit (Greninja) @ Chople Berry
Ability: Protean
Happiness: 0
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Water Shuriken
- Ice Beam
- Low Kick
- Protect
Good for bringing unwanted Aerodactyls down to Earth. I'm surprised how much Low Kick has caught other Greninjas and enemy Weaviles by surprise. Considering to replace Water Shuriken with Hydro Pump, Surf, or Scald.

Chandelure @ Charti Berry
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Flamethrower
- Shadow Ball
- Energy Ball
- Protect
Good for taking out Bug and Grass types. Energy Ball damages Rock, Ground, and Water types, hopefully under Tailwind. A little slow, but there aren't many fast Fire types in this meta.

Noted weakness: huge weakness to Bug, Fairy, and Fighting. Weakness to Trick Room teams.

Chandelure @ Charti Berry
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Flamethrower
- Shadow Ball
- Energy Ball
- Protect
You were tricked by PS' spread suggestor. 248/8 does not work on Lv50 AT ALL. go 252/4 or 244/12 instead. (if only this was on discord so i could copypaste that EV guide again)
