Victim Of The Week [On Hiatus]

Slayer of Oysters Empoleon(Waterium Z)
Ability : Torrent
EVs : 252 HP / 228 SpA / 28 SpD
Modest Nature

Hydro Pump
Ice Beam
Aqua Jet
Yawn / Stealth Rock / Flash Cannon

Empoleon laughs at any attempt of retaliation from Cloyster so much that I am not even gonna put calcs here. From its side Empoleon easily destroys it. Hydro Pump can leave Cloyster with 1Hp(assuming Focus Sash) after Shell Smash and finish it with Aqua Jet if you want to save your Z-Move for another poke. The last slot can be arranged to whatever your team needs most.

The EVs on SpD are so Empoleon can always survive a Fire Blast from Timid Zard-Y and only 37% chance to get OHKO-ed from a modest one. Same statistics for Firium-Z Volcarona. Empoleon nails both after with Zard-Y always getting killed from Waterium Z plus Aqua Jet under drought.

Metagross @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 100 Atk / 156 Def
Impish Nature
- Bullet Punch
- Zen Headbutt
- Hammer Arm
- Earthquake

This set tanks Cloyster like a champ, and can 2HKO with ease. It's also good in general against physical threats of all sorts.

+2 252+ Atk Cloyster Icicle Spear (5 hits) vs. 252 HP / 156+ Def Metagross: 60-75 (32 - 40.1%) -- approx. 4.7% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

100 Atk Metagross Hammer Arm vs. -1 0 HP / 4 Def Cloyster: 96-114 (76.8 - 91.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

If you go 20 Atk / 236 Def, you can use a Snowball instead of Leftovers. It has less versatility, but is more fun. G I M M I C K S

+2 252+ Atk Cloyster Icicle Spear (5 hits) vs. 252 HP / 236+ Def Metagross: 60-70 (32 - 37.4%) -- approx. 21.7% chance to 3HKO
+2 252+ Atk Cloyster Ice Shard vs. 252 HP / 236+ Def Metagross: 18-22 (9.6 - 11.7%) -- possible 9HKO

+1 20 Atk Metagross Hammer Arm vs. -1 0 HP / 4 Def Cloyster: 134-158 (107.2 - 126.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- King's Shield
- Shadow Ball
- Flash Cannon
- Shadow Sneak

Pretty straightforward. Tank any hit Cloyster wants to go for and retaliate with a STAB move of your choice to OHKO. Shadow Sneak picks off Sash variants. Any offensive Aegi set would do the job as well but I really like Ghostium rn so here's my nom <3

Ability: Regenerator
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Recover
- Scald
- Haze
- Toxic

Toxapex can take on Cloyster and Haze its boosts away and either fish for a burn or Toxic it and recover spam until it dies.

252+ Atk Cloyster Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Toxapex: 35-45 (22.2 - 28.6%) -- possible 5HKO after Black Sludge recovery
+2 252+ Atk Cloyster Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Toxapex: 70-85 (44.5 - 54.1%) -- approx. 0.4% chance to 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery

Slowbro @ Slowbronite/Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
Level: 50
EVs: 248 HP / 160 Def / 100 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

- Rest / Slack Off
- Iron Defense
- Scald

I was originally gonna submit something else, but at the last minute, I decided to play with Slowbro instead. After 1 Iron Defense, it can take all of Cloyster's hits pretty well, and Slowbro can 2HKO it with scald, in return. Should Cloyster get burned, it greatly improves your matchup against Cloyster. I prefer Rest cause it can heal off status, as well, but Slack Off is an equally good option because you aren't asleep for 2 turns. If you don't want to waste a mega slot or leftovers, Kee Berry is a pretty good option, however the spread would have to be something like 248 HP 188 Def and the rest in Sp Def, or if you really need a switch-in to it 248 HP and 252 Def, so it can take a Rock Blast and activate Kee Berry.

+2 252+ Atk Cloyster Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. 248 HP / 160+ Def Slowbro: 95-115 (47.2 - 57.2%) -- approx. 18% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ Atk Cloyster Icicle Spear (5 hits) vs. 248 HP / 160+ Def Slowbro: 70-85 (34.8 - 42.2%) -- approx. 84.7% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ Atk Cloyster Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. +2 248 HP / 160+ Def Slowbro: 50-60 (24.8 - 29.8%) -- approx. 0% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ Atk Cloyster Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. +2 248 HP / 160+ Def Slowbro: 50-60 (24.8 - 29.8%) -- approx. 0% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

+2 252+ Atk Cloyster Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. 248 HP / 160+ Def Slowbro-Mega: 65-80 (32.3 - 39.8%) -- approx. 99.3% chance to 3HKO
+2 252+ Atk Cloyster Icicle Spear (5 hits) vs. 248 HP / 160+ Def Slowbro-Mega: 45-60 (22.3 - 29.8%) -- approx. 75.9% chance to 4HKO
+2 252+ Atk Cloyster Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. +2 248 HP / 160+ Def Slowbro-Mega: 35-45 (17.4 - 22.3%) -- possible 5HKO
+2 252+ Atk Cloyster Icicle Spear (5 hits) vs. +2 248 HP / 160+ Def Slowbro-Mega: 25-30 (12.4 - 14.9%) -- possible 7HKO

Tapu Koko @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 30 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice] / Dazzling Gleam
- Grass Knot
- U-turn

Scarf Koko can outspeed and KO Cloyster even after a Shell Smash boost, so you don't have to worry about Cloyster KOing you.

Lucario-Mega @ Lucarionite
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Bullet Punch
- Close Combat
- Swords Dance
- Coverage / Filler

Luke is an underestimated Mega in BSS and can deal with Cloyster easily with its typing and its STABs. Special Lucario is more efficient against Cloyster but Physical Lucario is better in BSS. Close Combat is a neat OHKO on Cloyster. Bullet Punch is here for the priority against a +2 Sash Smash Cloyster which can boost itself and attack in the same turn.

252 Atk Adaptability Mega Lucario Close Combat vs. 108 HP / 4 Def Cloyster: 180-212 (129.4 - 152.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Adaptability Mega Lucario Bullet Punch vs. 108 HP / 4 Def Cloyster: 32-38 (23 - 27.3%) -- 29.4% chance to 4HKO

Squash's Scarf Koko

i'm so sorry that i'm not voting for the memes or the things that lose to wateriumor the things that i don't like. i know toxapex and slowbro prolly beat it but i hate using them unlike this beautiful rker <3

Voting for ThickFatAzumarill's Toxapex

It reliably puts a full-stop to Cloyster and holds-up fairly well against many other threats. I'd REALLY like to vote for Kanon90's Empoleon, but I'm skeptical as to how well it'd fare outside very specific match-ups.

As much as I appreciate the Empoleon nomination (seriously though that mon is cool), I'm voting for The Squash's Tapu Koko.

I find Scarf Koko being a nice surprise to Cloyster, something that would outspeed Koko normally at +2. Also good for other scarfers/set-up mons like Gyarados, Mence, and Blaze.

I really like Toxapex for checking a bunch of boosters, and it takes on Cloyster just as well as it does Blaziken, Gyarados, Mimikyu, Lucario etc so gonna go with ThickFatAzumarill. Was very close to choosing Aegislash though lol

The Squash
Scarf Tapu Koko is a huge threat, no safe switch ins due to U-turn.
Good vs setup sweepers that think they can OHKO with boosted EQ.
Also checks Mega Swampert in rain.

Congratulations The Squash! Your submission will be logged in the Archive!
Victim of the Week #35 - Hippowdon

Now we have one of the only consistent top 15 mon which hasn't been covered. While the Heavyweight Pokemon doesn't offer a lot of offensive pressure, it offers defensive capabilities. It's a great Stealth Rock setter, and can discourage set up thanks to Yawn, and even use it + Whirlwind/Roar to rack up rocks chip damage. So, how do you deal with this mon?

Submissions will be closed in 4 days from now. Good Luck!

Tapu Fini @ Leftovers / Wiki Berry
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 244 HP / 252 Def / 12 Spe
Bold Nature
- Surf / Brine
- Moonblast
- Nature's Madness
- Taunt

Cant get Yawned / Toxiced, has Taunt to stop Rocks / Whirlwind, and STAB to bop it. Nature's Madness is cool for predicted switches and can be used with Brine but Surf is better for consistency.

Venusaur @ Venusaurite
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe
Modest Nature
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Synthesis
- Hidden Power Fire / Sleep Powder / Substitute

No matter which Mega-Venusaur you used, it's always a 2HKO on Hippowdon. You can try different strategies to avoid Yawn. You can try to make Hippo sleeping or setup a surprising Sub on Yawn (which gives you a free turn).
If you used a Defensive Venusaur, Hippowdon will break your Sub with EQ only 25% of the time. That gives you a free turn and a lot of opportunities to setup Leech Seed or anything you want.

The proud royal snake is a solid counter to Hippo. Leaf Storm always 2HKOs no matter how high the investment of Hippo on SpD. Taunt prevents Yawn/Slack Off/Stealth Rock and the likes. With Reflect Serperior becomes super resistant even to Ice Fang Hippos while RH puts in good work(Serperior loves to switch on Rock Tombs giving it another speed boost to its already high speed). Also helps partners like Volcarona/Zard-X etc set up comfortably.

Overall this round it is pretty much who writes Tapu Fini the fastest being the best answer to Hippo with Serperior/M-Venusaur and the likes coming right after it :)

Gyarados @ Lum Berry
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Might not be the best counter, but it definitely is an effective one. Can come in, taunt it, and force a switch. Lum Berry can let it switch into Yawn, and then taunt it.

Banned deucer.
While I agree Tapu Fini is a good answer to keep Hippowdon from functioning as a support, here is an option that can simply remove it in one hit:

Tapu Bulu @ Fightinium Z
Ability: Grassy Surge
Level: 50
EVs: 220 HP / 252 Atk / 36 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Wood Hammer
- Horn Leech
- Superpower
- Rock Tomb

252+ Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Hippowdon in Grassy Terrain: 218-260 (101.3 - 120.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

The reason why Fightinium Z was chosen over Choice Band is that as shown above, Wood Hammer is p much an overkill and according to my experience Hippowdon is sometimes paired with stuff like Ferrothorn or other Steel-types for them to handle Water-type moves while Hippowdon itself can handle Mega Charizard X and non-Bloom Doom variants of Blaziken for them in return. This means Tapu Bulu can simply use All-Out-Pummeling on lured Steel-type to gain first blood of the match or predict and slow down the threat using Rock Tomb if they are faster and vulnerable to All-Out-Pummeling. Even outsides checking Hipppowdon, Tapu Bulu is an excellent 'mon that handles other leads like Ferrothorn, Mega Kangaskhan, and Tyranitar.

Edit: Yes, this guy is vulnerable to Toxic but it is quite resilient to it thanks to Grassy Terrain, and after Yawning, it is not like Hippowdon will stay in and eagerly eat Wood Hammer anyway.

(EV spread allows Tapu Bulu to outspeed Adamant Mimikyu after Rock Tomb, keeping it from being a setup fodder in specific situations.)
