This is pretty basic, and it's there for you in the game from the get go. You can catch however many pokemon you want and store them in your PC, but the only pokemon that are allowed to battle are those received through trades or as gifts. By this I mean you can only use one game cartridge, and no online trades. Use the pokemon the game devs left for you in the houses and stuff.
For example, in Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal, you can trade for 6 pokemon: Onix, Rhydon, Rapidash, Voltorb, Aerodactyl, and Machop. You also get Togepi and the Starter as gifts. Talking to NPCs lands you a Spearow and a Shuckle, and the game corner offers Ekans, Dratini, Sandshrew, Wobbuffet and Abra depending on the version. You can set restrictions on what is available, like no game corner or starter, but your options are very limited as it is.
I have found through personal experience that this is a really painful challenge for early game before you get any badges, and becomes even more painful if you choose to ban strarters. Since the growth rate on traded pokemon is 1.5 times faster than normal, they grow ridiculously fast, which can elongate this early-game struggle. Once the ball gets rolling, though, the game plays fair aga
The replay-ability is super low, but the challenge is a good time. Have fun playing the game the way it is meant to be played: with other people's garbage.
