===================
**Fire-Types**: Shelmet has no significant way to damage Fire-types such as Ponyta and Larvesta, so the best Shelmet can hope for is to survive one hit and set up another layer of Spikes before being KO’d.
**Flying-Types**: Shelmet has nothing to hit Flying-types such as Vullaby and Rufflet hard - they are not even damaged by Spikes - and Shelmet is easily KO’d by them.
**Rock-Types**: They are not damaged heavily by Shelmet, and Shell Smash users such as Dwebble and Tirtouga can use Shelmet as set-up fodder. Kabuto can spin away Spikes and deal heavy damage with Rock Slide and Onix can prevent Shelmet from setting up with Taunt and just about KO with Rock Blast. These Rock-types can also set up Stealth Rock as well, hurting Shelmet's ability to pivot in throughout the match.
**Rapid Spin and Defog Users** Pokemon such as Staryu and Vullaby can remove the Spikes, making it pointless to set them up, and Shelmet doesn’t do much damage to them in return. In particular, Vullaby can significantly damage Shelmet with a Flying-type move.
**Set-Up Sweepers** Pokemon such as Timburr, Vullaby, and Spritzee can use Shelmet as set-up fodder and set up, not fearing Shelmet’s Leech Life. They can then break through its bulk to KO and proceed to cause havoc on the rest of your team. Shelmet’s best option is to Toxic so its teammates can take out the opponent more easily.

[OVERVIEW]
- Shelmet fills the role of a Spikes setter, which chips down the opponent's team throughout the match.
- Shelmet's Bug-typing gives it a resistance to the widespread Fighting-type. It is very bulky and has access to Recover and the health-absorbing Leech Life, allowing it to come in and set up Spikes multiple times throughout a match.
- Baton allows Shelmet to function as a slow pivot and bring in teammates safely.
- Overcoat grants Shemet an immunity to Foongus' Spore, giving your team a sleep absorber.
- Despite Shelmet’s good defensive qualities, it is very weak offensively, having a limited movepool and being very passive.
- Shelmet is also very susceptible to Taunt, being effectively neutralized by the move.
- Shelmet is weak to the Flying-types such Vullaby and Rufflet that run rampant in the tier, making it difficult to always make the best use of its great bulk. Shelmet is also weak to Stealth Rock, so if it is set Shelmet loses a quarter of its health every time it switches in.
- Spikes faces competition from Stealth Rock as an entry hazard, so Shelmet faces competition from Stealth Rock setters such as Onix, Ferroseed, and Dwebble.

Moves
========
- Spikes does consistent damage to all grounded Pokemon, regardless of typing, and provides good team support as the opponent takes damage when switching throughout the battle.
- Recover also makes Shelmet a great hazard setter because it can heal up and come in multiple times throughout a match to set up Spikes.
- Leech Life provides Shelmet with a solid offensive attack, and the extra health restored in addition to Recover helps it to survive throughout the match.
- Baton Pass allows Shelmet to act as a slow pivot, using its great bulk to take a hit, then switch out and bring a teammate in safely.
========
- An Impish nature, 156 Defense EVs and 236 Special Defense allow Shelmet to hit even numbers, maximizing the value of the Eviolite. The 116 HP EVs provide more longevity and minimize Stealth Rock damage.
- Having Eviolite as the held item adds even greater bulk to Shelmet.
- Overcoat makes Shelmet a good sleep absorber for your team, being immune to Foongus' Spore.
========
- Shelmet should always be trying to set up Spikes.
- Shelmet is good at coming throughout the match thanks to its great bulk and Recover, so it doesn't need to try and set up three layers of Spikes at one time. For example, it can come in on Fighting-types and Foongus and proceed to set up Spikes.
- Shelmet can set up Spikes at the start of the match as a lead, but it struggles against other common leads such as Onix and Dwebble.
- After setting up Spikes or if you need to bring another Pokemon in without it taking a hit, Baton Pass can be used to have Shelmet take an attack and bring a teammate in safely.
- Shelmet should generally avoid being in against Pokemon that set up, such as Shell Smashers and Bulk Up Timbur, because it becomes set-up fodder.
========
- Pokemon that resist Flying-type moves such as Chinchou, Tirtouga, and Magnemite make good teammates. Chinchou and Tirtouga are also good teammates because they can take Fire-type attacks from Pokemon such as Ponyta and Larvesta.
- Volt Switch and U-turn users such as Chinchou, Elekid, Mienfoo, and Rufflet make great teammates for Shelmet because they can bring it in to set up Spikes. They also gain momentum, causing the opponent to switch out and take damage from Spikes after they’ve been set up. Shelmet also forms a switching core with these Pokemon since it has Baton Pass itself to switch out.
- Frail, offensive Pokemon appreciate Shelmet's ability to being them in safely with Baton Pass as well as the chip damage Spikes provides so they can get KOs.
- Powerful wallbreakers tend to force a lot switches, which would rack up Spikes damage on the opponent's team.
- Spikes takes multiple turns to set up fully, so having them get removed is very costly. Having a Spinblocker or Defog deterrent becomes very important, so Pokemon such as Pumpkaboo-Super, Frillish, and Pawniard are good teammates.
- Rapid Spin users are good teammates because Shelmet takes a lot of damage from Stealth Rock. However, Defog should not be used because it also removes the Spikes Shelmet set up.

Other Options
=============
- Bug Buzz can be used over Leech Life to make Shelmet a special attacker, but the health recovered by Leech Life is preferred because it adds to Shelmet’s longevity.
- Sludge Bomb is an option for the last slot, but it leaves Shelmet unable to deal much damage at all against very bulky Pokemon such as Vullaby and Foongus.
- Infestation can be used to provide chip damage and trap an opponent if you predict a switch-in, allowing you to bring in a Pokemon that has a favorable match-up. However, the more consistent damage and permanency of Toxic is a better choice.
- Curse and Acid Armor are both options to be set up and passed with Baton Pass, but it is generally too difficult to fit either of these moves onto its set. Baton Pass, Recover and an attacking move are required, and Spikes is the whole reason to use Shelmet over another Pokemon.
- Shell Armor could be used as an ability to prevent critical hits, but Overcoat's immunity to Spore is much more useful.
- Shelmet has lackluster offensive stats, so Toxic provides it with a consistent way to deal damage to defensive Pokemon that would otherwise take very little damage from Leech Life.
- Encore is an option to lock the foe into an unfavorable move, preventing Shelmet from becoming set-up fodder.
