OU Serperior

[OVERVIEW]

Serperior is a powerful setup sweeper in the OU metagame thanks to Contrary, which allows it to repeatedly fire off boosted Leaf Storms without having to worry about the Special Attack drops, instead gaining a free +2 Special Attack boost. Serperior's Speed tier allows it to outspeed fully invested base 110s such as Latios and Gengar. It also notably has access to several useful utility moves such as Glare and Leech Seed. However, Serperior struggles with the prominence of faster threats that can potentially put an end to an attempted sweep, such as Greninja, Tapu Koko, and Scolipede. Its coverage is also extremely lacking, with its only notable special coverage moves being Hidden Power and Dragon Pulse, which means that it can be easily walled. This is further bolstered by its poor unboosted base 75 Special Attack and terrible offensive typing, which leaves it easily taken care of by common threats such as Volcarona, Mega Charizard Y, and Tornadus-T.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Leaf Storm is a powerful STAB move that simultaneously boosts Serperior's Special Attack. Hidden Power Fire breaks through bulky Steel-types like Ferrothorn, Celesteela, Mega Scizor, and Jirachi, as well as bulky Grass-types like Amoonguss and Tangrowth. Substitute allows Serperior to set up on more passive Pokemon like defensive Celesteela and Hippowdon and avoid status. Leech Seed gives Serperior the ability to deal chip damage to its common checks and counters such as Heatran and Alolan Marowak and recover HP. It also synergizes well with Substitute, as it allows Serperior to wear down slower threats if it's able to safely get off a Leech Seed by spamming Substitute.

Set Details
========

The given HP EVs allow Serperior to avoid its Substitute being broken by Rotom-W. 252 Speed EVs alongside a Timid nature allow Serperior to capitalize on its excellent Speed tier, giving it the ability to outspeed Pokemon like Kartana and Latios. Leftovers gives Serperior some passive recovery, increasing its longevity.

Usage Tips
========

Try to avoid switching into strong attackers such as Tapu Lele, Garchomp, and Mamoswine, as Serperior's bulk is not great. Status, in particular paralysis and poison, should also be avoided. Attempt to set up Leech Seed on a predicted switch into a check or counter, as many of Serperior's common answers can be beaten if Leech Seed is up by spamming Substitute. Be wary of Pokemon like Tapu Koko and Greninja that naturally outspeed Serperior when attempting to set up and sweep. When your opponent has a bulky Grass-resistant Pokemon on their team, try to avoid wasting Leaf Storm's PP, as Serperior is basically useless without the move. You can take advantage of the fact that your opponent will want to send in a hard counter to Serperior to prevent it from setting up by double switching.

Team Options
========

Stealth Rock setters like Landorus-T, Garchomp, and Dugtrio as well as Spikes setters like Greninja can chip down the opposing team with their hazards, allowing Serperior to pick up more KOs. Rotom-W is a useful partner for its ability to take on Heatran and provide a slow Volt Switch to get Serperior in safely. Heatran itself is also a good teammate for its ability to set Stealth Rock and take on the bulky Steel- and Fire-types that Serperior struggles to break through. Tapu Lele is able to beat Mega Venusaur and Amoonguss while also protecting Serperior from priority moves with its Psychic Terrain. Hoopa-U and Mega Alakazam are also good partners for their ability to beat bulky Poison-types that trouble Serperior. Finally, Psychic-types like Latios as well as Pokemon like Greninja and Magearna appreciate Serperior's ability to wear down Steel-types.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A more offensive set with Normalium Z and Hyper Beam could be used to break through some of Serperior's traditional checks and surprise Pokemon such as Mega Charizard Y, Volcarona, and Tornadus-T. However, the utility provided by SubSeed is generally a lot more useful. Synthesis is an option to give Serperior a more reliable form of recovery, but the combination of Leftovers and Leech Seed is usually enough. A Choice Scarf set can take advantage of Serperior's good Speed tier, and with Glare it can also cripple certain setup sweepers for a teammate, such as Volcarona and Mega Charizard X. However, such a set requires heavy team support to function. Hidden Power Rock beats Mega Charizard Y and Volcarona, but it is otherwise generally inferior to Hidden Power Fire. Hidden Power Ground is also an option to break through one of Serperior's main checks in Heatran, but it misses out on a lot of coverage, and Heatran can already be somewhat beaten with Substitute and Leech Seed. Giga Drain can be used alongside Leaf Storm to allow Serperior to recover its HP once it has fully set up.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fire-types**: Heatran is one of the biggest threats to Serperior, as it can take even boosted Leaf Storms and OHKO with its strong Fire-type attacks. Mega Charizard X, Alolan Marowak, and Volcarona can also tank Leaf Storms and potentially set up on Serperior.

**Flying-types**: Zapdos, Celesteela, and Skarmory can check Serperior defensively, although the latter two take a considerable amount from Hidden Power Fire. Quick Attack Mega Pinsir can also revenge kill a weakened Serperior.

**Grass-types**: Mega Venusaur, Assault Vest Tangrowth, and Amoonguss are all capable of walling Serperior, though they have to watch out for boosted Hidden Power Fire.

**Faster Pokemon**: Due to Serperior's fairly mediocre bulk, it is prone to being revenge killed by certain faster Pokemon and Choice Scarf users such as Tornadus-T, Greninja, Heatran, Gengar, and Garchomp.

**Specially Bulky Pokemon**: Chansey can repeatedly take boosted Leaf Storms thanks to its high special bulk. Celesteela, Assault Vest Magearna, Alolan Muk, and specially defensive Skarmory can also check Serperior, as they resist Leaf Storm and have a significant amount of special bulk.

**Unaware Clefable**: Clefable with Unaware ignores Special Attack boosts from Leaf Storm and so is able to defensively check Serperior.[/hide][/quote]

- remove all hp ground slashes. subseed can beat heatran since most heatran don't use leftovers and the z-move set should definitely not be using hp ground because the coverage is shit.

- normalium z lets you break tangrowth (hp ice bounces off and the rare sludge bomb doesn't do enough), amoonguss with prior damage, and also venusaur with prior damage. z-hyper beam also smokes the zards, volcarona, tapu bulu, and zapdos.
- use giga drain with life orb if you aren't using z-hyper beam. taunt does not do much outside of prevent things from setting up on you (which you have glare for lel) and stopping hazards when clicking leaf storm is often more beneficial and the safer play.
- grassium z in set details i guess

Yeah, don't slash HP Ground. I'm not too experienced with Serp so I don't think I'll give this a full check, but I know for sure HP Ground is really sub-par on Serp.

Not QC.

On the offensive set, please don't have 4 slashes on the fourth move. Simply move Dragon Tail to Moves. Also mention Knock Off as well, since it specifically deals with Heatran's Leftovers, Tangrowth's Assault Vest, and Chansey's Eviolite. :]

I would put Knock Off in OO. It can make Celesteela easier to wear down in the long run without having to use Subseed. It helps with Chansey and Amoonguss and can gimp Alolan Marowak and let you survive a Fire Punch from it, although most of the time it just dies to Leaf Storm.

Halcyon.

Remove Substitute and Dtail from the second set. Dtail completely invalidates Serperior's good speed tier and if you have a free turn, going for an extra Leaf Storm or Glare would almost always be a better option. I Think Taunt is also pretty much useless, save it for OO or at most a mention in the moves section. Normalium Z + Hyper Beam set that Vertex posted should be the offensive set. Latios is pretty much the only reason to run Dpulse and Latios is already not seen too often.

Don't mention Mega Venusaur when talking about HP Fire lol it hits for literally 20% at +2.

Mention good lure Pokemon to use alongside this in teams section. Electrium Latios/Gengar help lure Celesteela and stuff like Rockium Landorus-T is good for stuff like Tangrowth and Celesteela.

Finally, stay away from mentioning obvious stuff like rock setters being good partners. Every team is better with rocks and just about every mon in existence appreciates hazard stackers.

You aren't supposed to post GP checks until QC is finished and I've updated the title... there's a reason why I haven't gone through and capitalized stuff yet.

DeathByWobbuffet basically for clarity sake:
What is an amchecker? How is it different from a GPer?
The GP team consists of users who are approved to give official GP checks. Users who are not on the GP team but still post GP checks are called amateur checkers, or amcheckers, and their checks are called amchecks. Amchecks are not official and do not have to be implemented by writers, though they often make good changes and provide valuable insight! In fact, if a GP member believes an amcheck is good enough, they can stamp it so that it does count as an official check.

Official GPers are permitted to use placeholders (to avoid multiple GPers working on something at once); amcheckers cannot. GPers also post in the Grammar-Prose Team Queue after finishing a check; amcheckers do not do this. Finally, amchecks are not allowed on the Sun & Moon preview skeletons, since we want to get those onsite as soon as possible. If you're unsure whether you're allowed to amcheck something, see whether it says GP 0/1 or GP x/2. If it's 0/1 then amchecks are not allowed; if it's 0/2 or 1/2 amchecks are allowed!
Considering this analysis is nothing more but a skeleton and not a write-up (and since you're approved to amcheck IIRC) I really don't care if you have things capitalized or not in the skeleton just so long as it is done in the write-up. That is unless it was like that Gliscor analysis where it was just really bad.

  • Instead of saying "Leaf Storm is the only reason to use Serperior" you should go with general descriptions for the move.
  • Implement Vertex's version of the offensive set. It's much better.

Usage Tips (SubSeed)

This section is a bit light on content. Isn't there anything else you can cover here? Like what to do in situations where your opponent has heavy Grass-type resists (answer: don't waste Leaf Storm PP). You can also mention how Serperior is good for double switching since your opponent will likely hard switch into a check in order to prevent it from setting up.

Team Options (SubSeed)

In the last line, it's worth mentioning Mega Alakazam and Mega Metagross as suitable partners as well, and be sure to point out that Tapu Lele/Zam are offensive checks to Mega Venusaur/Amoongus, and that it can be dangerous to switch into them due to their Poison STAB.

In usage tips especially for substitute variants mention how switching into defog can make serperior very scary as defog will give it an evasion boost. (It can take advantage of Tapu Fini rather well.)

Overview

Little too positive about its sweeping capabilities; while it certainly is neglected on a multitude of builds, it isn't hard to naturally check Serperior in this metagame, and due to the fast offensive threats, like Greninja, that weren't there in ORAS, it doesn't usually get to act as a win condition the same way it did before.

Don't mention Dragon Tail at all in the analysis.

SubSeed

remove Mega Venusaur from HP Fire targets, like you'll be using HP Fire vs it but it doesn't do enough to actually be worth using vs it. Sub should have more mentions of how it works well with Leech Seed, allowing you to wear down slower threats due to spamming sub.

Don't really have any gripes with the EV spread but is that really relevant enough in this meta? Rotom isn't that common and Serperior beats it regardless; maybe there's a better benchmark to hit. I didn't really find anything after looking for a few minutes, so it's fine to keep, but if you happen to think up something better could probably switch to it.

Go a little more in detail about what you want to avoid switching into, ie status, strong attacks, etc

Realistically I don't think Tapu Bulu would be a good teammate; sure boosted Leaf Storms is nice on paper, but the defensive synergy between the two is pretty horrid, opening up really big weaknesses to Fires and Flying types, while also using two Grass types that don't check Greninja. If you have positive experience with these two feel more than free to keep it, but it seems sorta like it's a theorymon core that doesn't have much actual positive benefit.

In Team Options, I would also bring up things that appreciate Steels like Celesteela, Heatran, and Magearna being worn down, such as Psychic-types, some Waters like Greninja (for Celesteela/Magearna), Offensive Magearna, Garchomp, etc.

Offensive

Personally I've found this set to be incredibly lackluster and wouldn't give it anything more than an OO mention, if you or other QC disagree with this it's fine to keep, but I don't think it's a worthwhile thing to use.

If you keep it, I'd put a mention of Nature Power coupled with Tapu Lele. Z-Nature Power in Psychic Terrain lets you OHKO Amoonguss and Toxapex at +2. If you don't keep it give it an OO mention.

Mention the same stuff about wearing down checks for other 'Mons as I brought up in the SubSeed set.

Other Options

Mention Scarf Serperior as an option; it's pretty good speed tier, spammable Leaf Storm if steels could be removed, Glare is really nice to let it suicide Glare things like Volcarona, amongst other things

Checks and Counters

Mention faster Pokemon, ie Scarfers like Nihilego, Heatran, Gengar, Garchomp after being worn down, and stuff like Greninja and Tornadus-T, which you don't mention at all.

Remove Scarf Salamence mention, make sure you specify AV Tangrowth and not regular. Wouldn't really call Ferrothorn a good check to Serperior so I'd support removing that too.

Mention Unaware Clefable pls

Not qc or anything, but pretty sure you mean Nature Power, which changes what move it is based on the terrain (turns into Psychic/Z-Psychic with Psychic Terrain).

Finally implemented the check, sorry for taking so long. I've kept the offensive set for now but removed the life orb/giga drain slashes.

Leech Seed gives Serperior the ability to deal chip damage to its common checks and counters and recover HP.
Mention some examples. Heatran is pretty big because you can potentially 1v1 it.

**Grass-types**: Mega Venusaur, Assault Vest Tangrowth, and Assault Vest Amoonguss are all capable of walling Serperior, though they have to watch out for boosted Hidden Power Fire.
Just mention Amoonguss. AV is not a set. Clear Smog can cancel out its boosts too. Make sure you mention AV Tangrowth as well.

  • Add Alolan Marowak to Fire-type C&C
  • Add AV Magearna and Alolan Muk to specially bulky Pokemon C&C
