UU Rotom-Mow

[OVERVIEW]

Rotom-C's Electric / Grass typing makes it an effective momentum gainer with Volt Switch, as most Ground-types are greatly threatened by a STAB Leaf Storm. In addition to this, Rotom-C possesses valuable utility options such as Trick and Will-O-Wisp, as well as a solid Special Attack stat. Its great offensive typing means that there aren't too many Pokemon that consistently switch into it, especially in conjunction with the fact that it easily gains momentum with Volt Switch. However, Rotom-C struggles greatly with the high usage of Pokemon such as Mega Latias, Hydreigon, and Mega Altaria, all of which threaten it out with a powerful STAB move and resist its STAB attacks. As a Water-resistant Pokemon, Rotom-C faces competition from stronger and bulkier Pokemon such as Latias, Hydreigon, and Mega Altaria. Rotom-C also faces competition from Rotom-W and Mega Manectric; the former has a better defensive typing and the latter is faster and has strong Fire-type coverage, although Rotom-C still has a niche in being able to hit Ground-types that are usually used to deal with Electric-types.

Moves
========

Volt Switch is used to gain momentum on the Pokemon Rotom-C forces out, such as Primarina, Mega Blastoise, and Empoleon. Leaf Storm, in conjunction with Grassium Z, can deal extremely large amounts of damage to anything that doesn't resist it, OHKOing Pokemon such as Nidoking and Gliscor after Stealth Rock. Thunderbolt is stronger than Volt Switch and notably OHKOes Mega Aerodactyl and Mega Pidgeot. Will-O-Wisp cripples Pokemon that Rotom-C cannot OHKO, such as Scizor and Cobalion. Hidden Power Fire is mainly used to OHKO Choice Band Scizor, which otherwise survives any one hit and OHKOes with U-turn or, if burned, still hits Rotom-C extremely hard. Hidden Power Ice is mainly used to heavily damage Gliscor after Grassium Z has been used but also has a 50% chance to OHKO standard Mega Sceptile. Pain Split gives Rotom-C some longevity to switch into Scald more easily and to keep it at high health so it can handle Suicune more easily.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed and Special Attack investment allows Rotom-C to hit as hard and as fast as possible, while a Timid nature is crucial to allow Rotom-C to outspeed the likes of Xurkitree and Togekiss. Grassium Z gives Rotom-C a one-time Grass-type nuke. The combination of Bloom Doom and Leaf Storm is enough to 2HKO bulky Pokemon such as Raikou and Mega Steelix. Levitate is Rotom-C's only ability and is very useful to avoid Toxic Spikes, Spikes, and Sticky Web and gives it a Ground immunity.

Usage Tips
========

This Rotom-C set is able to bluff a Choice item against Pokemon such as Swampert, Gliscor, and Nidoking, so don't reveal the ability to switch moves early in the game because they might scout for it. Volt Switch is the most spammable move on the set to gain momentum on common Rotom-C switch-ins such as Latias and Amoonguss. Keep Rotom-C healthy so it can take hits such as Mega Aerodactyl's Stone Edge if Rotom-C is your only check to these threats. Volt Switch doesn't have the power to OHKO certain Pokemon such as Mega Pidgeot and Mega Aerodactyl, so Thunderbolt should be used against these threats. Avoid spamming Volt Switch when Manectric is on the other team so that you don't give it a Special Attack raise from Lightning Rod.

Team Options
========

VoltTurn users such as Scizor, Mega Beedrill, Mega Manectric, and Hydreigon work well with Rotom-C, as they are able to form a VoltTurn core with Rotom-C to continuously gain momentum. Entry hazard removers are also mandatory on VoltTurn teams, so Pokemon such as Latias and Starmie are appreciated. Gliscor is one of Rotom-C's best teammates, as it turns Pokemon such as Blissey into setup fodder while Rotom-C handles bulky Water-types such as Swampert and Rotom-W. Entry hazard setters are great to pressure common Rotom-C switch-ins like Latias and Celebi, so Pokemon such as Mamoswine and Klefki make for good teammates. Strong wallbreakers that appreciate Volt Switch momentum, such as Heracross, Crawdaunt, and Mamoswine, also make for good teammates. Pokemon that pressure Dragon-types such as Mega Altaria, Mega Latias, Mega Sceptile, and Hydreigon are also appreciated; Sylveon, Mamoswine, and Mega Altaria fit this role well.

Moves
========

Volt Switch is used to gain momentum on any non-Ground-type and still hits decently hard. Leaf Storm is an extremely powerful STAB move that hits Ground-types hard but drops Rotom-C's Special Attack by two stages. It should be used for its power against Pokemon that it can OHKO, such as Gliscor after Stealth Rock and Nidoking, which are both immune to Thunderbolt. Thunderbolt is a reliable STAB attack that sports solid power and reliability. Trick is a good utility option to cripple walls such as Amoonguss and Blissey.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed and Special Attack EVs make Rotom-C as strong and as fast as possible, and a Timid nature allows it to outspeed Pokemon such as Nidoking and Mamoswine. Levitate is Rotom-C's only ability and gives it a useful Ground immunity as well as an immunity to Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Sticky Web. Choice Specs turns Rotom-C into a powerful momentum gainer and allows it to threaten defensive teams.

Usage Tips
========

The move you want to click most of the time is Volt Switch to gain momentum on common Rotom-C answers such as Amoonguss and Latias, unless the opponent has a Ground-type. Leaf Storm should be used on predicted Ground-type switch-ins like Swampert and Gliscor, although you should be extremely wary about setup sweepers such as Latias and Scizor that can take advantage of it. Thunderbolt and Volt Switch are similar cases, leaving Rotom-C setup fodder for Ground-types. Trick should be used against common switch-ins such as Blissey and Amoonguss to cripple them. Rotom-C doesn't like being worn down into the range of attacks such as Mega Aerodactyl's Stone Edge, so try keeping it healthy so it can tank hits.

Team Options
========

Rotom-C appreciates teammates that can deal with bulky Grass-types, so Pokemon such as Talonflame, Infernape, and Mega Beedrill make for good teammates. Wallbreakers that appreciate Volt Switch momentum, such as Infernape, Mega Sharpedo, Hydreigon, and Nidoking, make for good teammates as well. Pokemon that deal with Dragon-types such as Latias, Hydreigon, and Mega Sceptile also pair well with Rotom-C. Togekiss is a fantastic option that can clear hazards with Defog and break down Grass-types. Klefki deals with these Pokemon pretty well too and also lays Spikes for Rotom-C to take advantage of. Entry hazard removers such as Togekiss and Starmie are good teammates because Rotom-C hates getting chipped from Stealth Rock. Entry hazard setters like Gliscor and Hippowdon make for good teammates to pressure switch-ins such as Celebi. It also improves rolls for Rotom-C; for example, Volt Switch after Stealth Rock OHKOes standard Mega Blastoise. U-turn users such as Mega Beedrill and Scizor can make a VoltTurn core with Rotom-C to keep up momentum.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A defensive set with Leftovers that utilizes Will-O-Wisp, Thunderbolt, Volt Switch, and Leaf Storm is an option to take advantage of Rotom-C's typing and resistances, but it faces a lot of competition from other defensive Grass-types such as Celebi and Amoonguss due to their access to reliable recovery. Such a set could also run Pain Split to be able to at least gain some health back. Choice Scarf turns Rotom-C into a decent revenge killer, but it's weaker than the other sets and faces competition from other Choice Scarf users, such as Hydreigon and Infernape. Signal Beam is an option on both sets to heavily damage Hydreigon, Latias, and Celebi, but it faces competition for a moveslot from Rotom-C's other options, such as Will-O-Wisp and Hidden Power Fire. Hidden Power Ice can OHKO Mega Sceptile.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Grass-types**: Amoonguss is one of the best Rotom-C counters the tier has to offer because of Regenerator and its high special bulk that allows it to easily sponge repeated hits. Celebi is a similar case, but it takes a huge amount of damage from a potential Signal Beam. Tsareena, while uncommon, can either Rapid Spin on Rotom-C or just U-turn out to gain momentum.

**Dragon-types**: Latias and Hydreigon have little to no problems taking repeated hits from Rotom-C, as both can recover off any lost health and hit hard with a STAB Draco Meteor. Mega Sceptile is 4x resistant to Grass and immune to Electric thanks to Lightning Rod. All three Pokemon hate the rare Signal Beam, however.

**Special Walls**: Blissey completely walls every Rotom-C variant and can use the free turns Rotom-C gives it to set up entry hazards or spread Toxic. Snorlax walls Choice Scarf variants and can take advantage of Leaf Storm Special Attack drops to set up Curses. Alolan Muk does not take repeated Volt Switches, but it threatens Rotom-C with Poison Jab and punishes switching with Pursuit.

**Faster Attackers**: Faster attackers such as Infernape, Mega Beedrill, and Mienshao are some of Rotom-C's biggest threats, as they all possess either super effective STAB moves or raw strength to break past it. Infernape threatens Rotom-C out with a super effective Fire-type move or gains momentum on it with U-turn. Mega Beedrill also threatens an OHKO on Rotom-C with U-turn, therefore gaining momentum on it. Mienshao threatens huge damage on Rotom-C with High Jump Kick and also gains momentum on it with U-turn.

I was debating between actually including a Choice Specs set, but I've used it a bit and never had much success with it, and I feel Scarf is a lot more viable in this metagame. Let me know if I should change this.

Hey, before any of us QC check this, just to let you know that Choice Specs Rotom-Mow 100% deserves its own set in the analysis. It's definitely not as strong as Xurkitree or Raikou but distinguishes itself with the access to STAB Leaf Storm to deter Ground-types (granted Xurkitree does get Energy Ball and Grass Knot) and honestly just hit hard in general, access to Levitate, and accecss to a defensive typing that lets it switch into Water-types more easily if you want to use it to check them. Stuff like that.

As far as moves go, it's pretty much the same as what you have for Scarf. Just get that done and one of us will give this a proper look through.

Hey QC should I add a Grassium Z set? I've seen it used a bit on the ladder and in the UU grand slam and it's a very good one-time nuke that almost OHKOes typical Electric checks like Gliscor and does OHKO after Stealth Rock.

Yeah it's been really picking up traction lately, so I'd include it. Sorry that this has been left unchecked for so long btw.

Wisp messes up a bunch of typical switch-ins, especially after a Leaf Storm drop, but HP Fire is nice for Scizor, since you still take quite a bit from U-turn if it's burned. Signal Beam hits Hydreigon, Latias, Celebi, and Mega Sceptile decently hard. Mention HP Ice and Pain Split in Moves, though; HP Ice hits Meg Sceptile and Gliscor (If you already used the Z-Move) harder, and Pain Split is just for better overall longevity as a switch-in to Scald and stuff. The slashes aren't really finalised so we'll make changes to that later if necessary, but those are the moves we'd want to cover in the set.

grassium set should probably be something like this

move 3: Thunderbolt
move 4: Hidden Power Fire / Will-o-Wisp

and make pain split a mention.

move scarf into oo. there are a billion other scarfers better than it and its stabs arent amazing for a rker especially without megapert in the tier (remove mentions of it btw, and the buzzwole and conk mentions too!)

specs should be the first set and then z grass

with scarf in oo you should make less of an emphasis on its rking capabilities, as such remove the thing saying it can check the mons faster than it in the overview (it only really checks primarina without scarf lol). instead you should talk about its nuking capabilities because aside from the other grasses and dragons its pretty hard to switch into

mention mega sceptile in overview with the section with celebi amoon etc for obvious reasons

get rid of the signal beam stuff for all of the sets and make it a mention in oo

add muk-a into special walls, while its not exactly difficult to wear down it doesnt really take much from rotoms attacks, fucks it up with gunk and can punish it with pursuit

honestly get rid of the section with uturn and just make it into faster attackers, with hydra mien zor staying there but add mega bee, nape, weavile, etc etc.

sorry this is quite the messy check, let me know when you do this and ill stamp

I'd probably move the Grassium Z set to be the first one with how popular it has become on Rotom-Mow. Other members of QC can give input here if they disagree, but I haven't seen Specs in forever, both in tours and on the ladder.

Choice Specs set

Moves
  • Your sentences here aside from the one for Trick are very vague and don't tell much about what that specific move is used for on the Pokemon (for this set). It's going to be similar to what you did for the Grassium Z set, but you should be highlighting what the power difference with the Choice Specs does for it. For example, Specs Volt Switch is capable of OHKOing fast Mega Blastoise after Stealth Rock damage; Bloom Doom from the Grassium Z set is going to be stronger than Specs Leaf Storm, but it's worth noting how Specs Leaf Storm OHKOes Gliscor after Stealth Rock damage too. Stuff like that is more useful to the reader.
Usage Tips
  • You compared this set to the Choice Scarf set, but that set is now in Other Options, so remove that part.
  • It's true that Ground-types face 50/50s against Rotom-Mow and may fear switching in, but you did mention Nidoking as an example with the tip on when to use Leaf Storm / Thunderbolt, so I'd just make a small adjustment in your phrasing to accommodate using Leaf Storm for expected Ground-type switch-ins.
  • Make mention of how Rotom-Mow needs to be careful about what it locks itself into. Leaf Storm drops its Special Attack, so it's easier to set up on; Thunderbolt is setup fodder for Ground-types.
  • Mention when to use Trick.
Team Options
  • A very important thing for Specs Rotom-Mow is good hazard setters as partners. There are quite a few rolls with its moves on Pokemon that aren't possible without at least Stealth Rock up. It also takes advantage of the switches that Specs Rotom-Mow will tend to force.
  • You mentioned Togekiss in passing, but mention hazard removers as a whole considering it's going to be switching in and out a lot, which would just lead it to get worn down by entry hazards.
  • Late-game cleaners like Mega Sharpedo are good to have with something that can pivot and wallbreak like Specs Rotom-Mow, although I guess you could just edit the point about Pokemon that appreciate the momentum to include this.
Grassium Z set

Team Options
  • Looks fine overall, but as redundant as it is, you definitely need to mention hazards and hazard removers for Pokemon that are involved in VoltTurn cores.

Finally, remove all mentions of Xurkitree and Mega Swampert from your analysis before writing it up. QC 2/3

Overview

Mention that it competes with other, much more common Pokemon in the tier like Latias, Mega Altaria, and Hydreigon as a Water resist. Most of the defensive benefits of its typing are also provided by much more common Pokemon. Try to emphasize why Rotom-C should be selected at all in the current meta (its Grass-type STAB allows it to bypass Seismitoed and Gastrodon, which are gaining popularity as an answer to VoltTurn archetypes, for example. It's also a check to Rotom-W that isn't weak to Pursuit).

Grassium Z

Remove the Xurkitree mention. Include Heracross as one of the strong wallbreakers that benefits from Volt Switch, probably over Darmanitan. Overall, you'll want to make sure your analysis is updated for the current meta, which should include tips about subjects like being careful about spamming Volt Switch to avoid giving Manectric a Lightningrod boost, playing around other VoltTurn Pokemon and answers to VoltTurn, and teammates capable of taking on standard answers to Rotom-C.

Choice Specs

Hidden Power Ice deserves a mention in Moves since it prevents you from being completely walled by Mega Sceptile.

Checks and Counters

Remove the Weavile mentions.

QC 3/3.

Pain Split gives Rotom-C some longevity to switch into Scald more easily and to keep it at on high health so it can handle Suicune more easily.

Usage Tips
========

This Rotom-C set is able to bluff a Choice item against Pokemon such as Swampert, Gliscor, and Nidoking, so don't reveal the ability to switch moves early in the game because they might scout for it. Like the other sets, Volt Switch is the most spammable move on the set to gain momentum on common Rotom-C switch-ins such as Latias and Amoonguss.

========

Strong wallbreakers that appreciate Volt Switch momentum, such as Heracross, Crawdaunt, and Mamoswine, (add comma) also make for good teammates. Pokemon that pressure Dragon-types such as Mega Altaria, Mega Latias, Mega Sceptile, and Hydreigon are also appreciated; Sylveon, Mamoswine, and Mega Altaria fit this role well.

Moves

Volt Switch a STAB attack that is used to gain momentum on any non-Ground-type and still hits decently hard.

Usage Tips
========

========

Klefki also deals with these Pokemon pretty well too and also lays up Spikes for Rotom-C to take advantage of.

Other Options
=============

Signal Beam is an option on both sets to heavily damage Hydreigon, Latias, and Celebi, but it faces competition for a moveslot from by Rotom-C's other options, such as Will-O-Wisp and Hidden Power Fire. Hidden Power Ice can OHKO Mega Sceptile.

Checks and Counters
===================
