Quilava (ADV NU Analysis)

Disaster Area

formerly Piexplode
Thanks to Oglemi most of this is just reworded and edited from the Charmeleon Analysis, since it's a very similar Pokemon.

[Overview]
- Tied 3rd-fastest Fire-type in the tier, alongside the very similar Charmeleon, giving it an edge over Flareon who is slightly stronger.
- Really one-dimensional, isn't going to be doing much apart from its special attacker set
- Easier to wall than Charmeleon due to no access to Dragon Claw, meaning Fire and Dragon types are harder on it, but Quick Attack allowing it to KO Endure+Flail/Reversal users, or Roar to Phaze opposing switch-ins merit it a slightly different niche to Charmeleon or Magby.

[SET]
name: Special Attacker
move 1: Fire Blast
move 2: Overheat
move 3: Hidden Power Grass
move 4: Quick Attack / Roar
item: Charcoal / Leftovers
nature: Timid / Modest
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
- Fire Blast is used as the main STAB move and is powerful enough to OHKO most of the threats it needs to with a layer or two of Spikes
- Overheat is used when the nuke is needed and Quilava can take the time to switch out.
- Hidden Power Grass shreds apart the Rock-types that would otherwise be able to switch into the Fire-type attacks, as well as easily 2HKOing Whiscash
- Quilava can run Quick Attack or Roar in the last slot. Whilst weak, Quick Attack allows it to KO EndRev and EndFlail users, whilst Roar lets it phaze incoming walls with Spikes support, and scout the opposing team. Overheat can be dropped to fit both of these.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
- Charcoal gives it the power boost required to OHKO 252/0 Glalie with Timid Fire Blast, but can achieve it anyway with Overheat if using Leftovers.
- Modest gives Quilava the power it needs to OHKO Hitmonchan with Fire Blast after a layer of Spikes, whereas Timid can allow it to outrun Hitmonchan and tie with Glalie and other base 80s at the cost of some power
- Flamethrower can be used over Overheat for the reliability, or indeed that slot can be dropped completely to fit both Quick Attack and Roar.
- Flareon and Magcargo give this set a hard time, making Water- and Rock-types good teammates
- Kecleon also walls this set, meaning Hitmonchan is a great teammate
- Spikes are amazing with this set, making Cacturne a good teammate as well.

[Other Options]
- Sub, Blast Burn, Toxic, Sunny Day, Focus Punch, and different Hidden Powers are all options, but are generally inferior to the moves given in the main set.

[Checks and Counters]
- Kecleon
- Flareon and Magcargo
- Wailord, Pelipper, and other Water-types apart from Whiscash and Relicanth
- Pidgeot and Murkrow can revenge kill with HP Ground
- Specially defensive Calm Mind Chimecho
- Sudowoodo just barely avoids the 2HKO from Fire Blast + HP Grass and OHKOes in return with Rock Slide
