Mega Metal Mantis Mania: An XY warstory

Replay here: http://pokemonshowdown.com/replay/pokebankoubeta-59604860

This is probably the one battle that has secured Mega Scizor a spot on my Showdown bro list. He pretty much single handedly won this battle for me, turning an otherwise mediocre performance by me into a victory.

michaeloche's team: Scizor / Rotom-Wash / Starmie / Ferrothorn / Hawlucha / Meowstic
qwertyhbvd's team: Florges / Tentacruel / Kangaskhan / Landorus-Therian / Slowbro / Virizion
Battle between michaeloche and qwertyhbvd started!
Go! Ferrothorn!
qwertyhbvd sent out Landorus-Therian!
The foe's Landorus-Therian intimidates Ferrothorn!
Ferrothorn's Attack fell!

Ferrothorn was my lead, due to his ability to use rocks and seeds, both beneficial to my team. I know he can take EQs from Lando-T all day, so his lead didn't bother me much.

Turn 1:
The foe's Landorus-Therian used Stealth Rock!
Pointed stones float in the air around your team!
Ferrothorn used Stealth Rock!
Pointed stones float in the air around the foe's team!

Yeah, that went as expected. I figured he would likely U-turn out, but I wasn't sure what he would bring in at the time. So I seeded and hoped for the best.

Turn 2:
The foe's Landorus-Therian used U-turn!
Ferrothorn lost 14.2% of its health!
The foe's Landorus-Therian is hurt by Ferrothorn's Iron Barbs!
The foe's Landorus-Therian went back to qwertyhbvd!
qwertyhbvd sent out Tentacruel!
Pointed stones dug into the foe's Tentacruel!
Ferrothorn used Leech Seed!
The foe's Tentacruel was seeded!
The foe's Tentacruel restored HP using its Black Sludge!
Ferrothorn restored HP using its Leftovers!
The foe's Tentacruel's health is sapped by Leech Seed!
Ferrothorn is hurt by the foe's Tentacruel's Liquid Ooze!

Ferrothorn (80%, -1 Atk)==Tentacruel (82%, seeded)<>Lando-T (88%)

I was not expecting his Tentacruel to have Liquid Ooze. I guess I had been playing BW rain too long and assumed it had Rain Dish. Luckily, I was sure he would spin, so I attacked.

Turn 3:
The foe's Tentacruel used Rapid Spin!
It's not very effective... Ferrothorn lost 0.9% of its health!
The foe's Tentacruel is hurt by Ferrothorn's Iron Barbs!
The foe's Tentacruel was freed from Leech Seed!
The pointed stones disappeared from around the foe's team!
Ferrothorn used Power Whip!
The foe's Tentacruel lost 31.7% of its health!
The foe's Tentacruel restored HP using its Black Sludge!
Ferrothorn restored HP using its Leftovers!

Ferrothorn (85%, -1 Atk)==Tentacruel (44%)

With Tentacruel's job done, I noticed the potential for a Virizion switch, so I aimed for my physical attacker check: Rotom-W. With Will-o-Wisp, I assumed it would cripple Virizion and make my life easier.

Turn 4:
qwertyhbvd withdrew Tentacruel!
qwertyhbvd sent out Virizion!
Ferrothorn, come back!
Go! Rotom-Wash!
Pointed stones dug into Rotom-Wash!
Rotom-Wash restored HP using its Leftovers!

Ferrothorn<>Rotom-W (94%)==Virizion (100%)<>Tentacruel

Turn 5:
The foe's Virizion used Substitute!
The foe's Virizion put in a substitute!
The foe's Virizion lost 24.8% of its health!
Rotom-Wash used Will-O-Wisp!
The foe's Virizion restored HP using its Leftovers!
Rotom-Wash restored HP using its Leftovers!

Rotom-W (99%)==Virizion (82%, sub)

I was not expecting that Substitute. With the sub up, that ruled out Pain Split as well, so I VSed out, but not before eating a CC.

Turn 6:
The foe's Virizion used Close Combat!
Rotom-Wash lost 50.5% of its health!
The foe's Virizion's Defense fell!
The foe's Virizion's Special Defense fell!
Rotom-Wash used Volt Switch!
It's not very effective... The substitute took damage for the foe's Virizion!
Rotom-Wash went back to michaeloche!
Go! Meowstic!
Pointed stones dug into Meowstic!
The foe's Virizion restored HP using its Leftovers!

Rotom-W (99%)<>Meowstic (88%)==Virizion (88%, sub, -1 Def, -1 SpD)

Meowstic is a Prankster dual screener, so he can take whatever Virizion can throw at him. After that, I aim to break that sub.

Turn 7:
Meowstic used Reflect!
Reflect raised your team's Defense!
The foe's Virizion used Leaf Blade!
Meowstic lost 17.9% of its health!
The foe's Virizion restored HP using its Leftovers!

Turn 8:
The foe's Virizion used Leaf Blade!
Meowstic lost 17.9% of its health!
Meowstic used Psychic!
It's super effective! The foe's Virizion's substitute faded!
The foe's Virizion restored HP using its Leftovers!

Meowstic (52%)==Virizion (100%, -1 Def, -1 SpD)

Mission accomplished. Now will it stay or go? I probably should have switched out, but his next move made Psychic a rough choice, as well as stalling out my screen.

Turn 9:
qwertyhbvd withdrew Virizion!
qwertyhbvd sent out Florges!
The foe's Florges has Flower Veil!
Meowstic used Psychic!
The foe's Florges lost 13.6% of its health!
The foe's Florges restored HP using its Leftovers!

Meowstic (52%)==Florges (93%)<>Virizion (100%)

Darn, a special wall. Luckily, Meowstic has Toxic, which can make that less of an issue.

Turn 10:
qwertyhbvd withdrew Florges!
qwertyhbvd sent out Landorus-Therian!
The foe's Landorus-Therian intimidates Meowstic!
Meowstic's Attack fell!
Meowstic used Toxic!
The foe's Landorus-Therian was badly poisoned!
The foe's Landorus-Therian restored HP using its Leftovers!
The foe's Landorus-Therian was hurt by poison!

Meowstic (52%)==Landorus-T (88%, tox)<>Florges (93%)

That's not what I meant to poison. I decide to put up my other screen as a fail safe.

Turn 11:
Meowstic used Light Screen!
Light Screen raised your team's Special Defense!
The foe's Landorus-Therian used U-turn!
It's super effective! Meowstic lost 24.4% of its health!
The foe's Landorus-Therian went back to qwertyhbvd!
qwertyhbvd sent out Florges!
The foe's Florges has Flower Veil!
The foe's Florges restored HP using its Leftovers!

Meowstic (28%)==Florges (99%)<>Landorus-T (88%, tox)

Okay, let's try this again. I did not realize at the time that Florges could be a cleric, and that came back to bite me.

Turn 12:
Meowstic used Toxic!
The foe's Florges was badly poisoned!
The foe's Florges used Aromatherapy!
A soothing aroma wafted through the area!
The foe's Florges restored HP using its Leftovers!

Meowstic (28%)==Florges (100%)

Not much Meowstic can do here. Time for my ace in the hole.

Turn 13:
Meowstic, come back!
Go! Scizor!
Pointed stones dug into Scizor!
The foe's Florges used Wish!

Meowstic (28%)<>Scizor (88%)==Florges (100%)

Not really sure what he was trying to heal, especially with his next move. I mega evolve Scizor here, but derp and think Florges is Grass type. Not that it mattered much.

Turn 14:
qwertyhbvd withdrew Florges!
qwertyhbvd sent out Landorus-Therian!
The foe's Landorus-Therian intimidates Scizor!
Scizor's Attack fell!
Scizor has Mega Evolved into Mega Scizor!
Scizor used Bug Bite!
It's not very effective... The foe's Landorus-Therian lost 16.6% of its health!
Florges's wish came true!
Your team's Reflect wore off!

Scizor (mega, 88%, -1 Atk)==Landorus-T (100%)<>Florges (100%)

And now Reflect is gone. Scizor is not gonna beat Lando-T at -1, so it's time to pivot.

Turn 15:
Scizor, come back!
Go! Ferrothorn!
Pointed stones dug into Ferrothorn!
The foe's Landorus-Therian used U-turn!
Ferrothorn lost 15.1% of its health!
The foe's Landorus-Therian is hurt by Ferrothorn's Iron Barbs!
The foe's Landorus-Therian went back to qwertyhbvd!
qwertyhbvd sent out Virizion!
Ferrothorn restored HP using its Leftovers!

Scizor (mega)<>Ferrothorn (70%)==Virizion (100%)<>Landorus-T (88%)

Well, here we go again. In retrospect, I probably should have gone for Gyro Ball here, but I wasn't sure how Ferro would take the CC. At least I got rocks back up.

Turn 16:
The foe's Virizion used Close Combat!
It's super effective! Ferrothorn lost 61.9% of its health!
The foe's Virizion is hurt by Ferrothorn's Iron Barbs!
The foe's Virizion's Defense fell!
The foe's Virizion's Special Defense fell!
Ferrothorn used Stealth Rock!
Pointed stones float in the air around the foe's team!
The foe's Virizion restored HP using its Leftovers!
Ferrothorn restored HP using its Leftovers!

Ferrothorn (14%)==Virizion (94%, -1 Def, -1 SpD)

Welp, so much for Ferrothorn. I decide to let him go down and revenge kill Virizion with Hawlucha.

Turn 17:
The foe's Virizion used Close Combat!
It's super effective! Ferrothorn lost 13.6% of its health!
The foe's Virizion is hurt by Ferrothorn's Iron Barbs!
The foe's Virizion's Defense fell!
The foe's Virizion's Special Defense fell!
Ferrothorn fainted!
The foe's Virizion restored HP using its Leftovers!
Go! Hawlucha!
Pointed stones dug into Hawlucha!

Ferrothorn (fainted)<>Hawlucha (88%)==Virizion (88%, -2 Def, -2 SpD)
Score: 5-6

With Virizion at -2 and a double weakness to Flying, there is no way in hell it's gonna stay in. Predicting the Lando-T switchin, I boost. Hone Claws is my boost here, due to HJK and SE being in his set.

Turn 18:
qwertyhbvd withdrew Virizion!
qwertyhbvd sent out Landorus-Therian!
Pointed stones dug into the foe's Landorus-Therian!
The foe's Landorus-Therian intimidates Hawlucha!

Your team's Light Screen wore off!

Hawlucha (88%, +1 acc)==Landorus-T (82%)<>Virizion (88%)

Hawlucha carries a gem-boosted Acrobatics. Let's see how it does...

Turn 19:
Hawlucha used Acrobatics!
The Flying Gem strengthened Acrobatics's power!
The foe's Landorus-Therian lost 59.4% of its health!
The foe's Landorus-Therian used Stone Edge!
Hawlucha lost 43.3% of its health!
The foe's Landorus-Therian restored HP using its Leftovers!

Hawlucha (45%, +1 acc)==Landorus-T (28%)

Not bad. At +1, that's an OHKO after rocks, which is good news for you SD Hawlucha users. Time to spam.

Turn 20:
qwertyhbvd withdrew Landorus-Therian!
qwertyhbvd sent out Slowbro!
Pointed stones dug into the foe's Slowbro!
Hawlucha used Acrobatics!
The foe's Slowbro lost 27.5% of its health!
The foe's Slowbro restored HP using its Leftovers!

Hawlucha (45%, +1 acc)==Slowbro (67%)<>Landorus-T (28%)

Well, shoot. I do not want to lose my boosts ( including Unburden, for what it's worth), but I can at least dent Bro here. Yes, I know I should have boosted, but I was wary of Scald.

Turn 21:
Hawlucha used Acrobatics!
The foe's Slowbro lost 25.2% of its health!
The foe's Slowbro used Thunder Wave!
Hawlucha is paralyzed! It may be unable to move!
The foe's Slowbro restored HP using its Leftovers!

Hawlucha (45%, +1 acc, par)==Slowbro (48%)

Yeah, should have boosted. Hope for no hax here.

michaeloche won the battle!

GG indeed. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is Scizor getting 6 KO's by itself, and why it is now a bro. Thanks for listening, and good luck in your XY battles.

I think my favorite part was when you predicted the switch to Verizion, and then immediately got out-predicted. I liked how the advantage kept shifting back and forth like that, it kept the battle interesting.

Can you explain why you had Starmie use rapid spin on turn 29? I understand you wanted to keep Scizor as healthy as possible, but at that point in the game I don't think you couldn't have switched him in more than once and still came out on top.

Didn't find it terribly entertaining for the most part. Early on especially you mostly failed to predict your opponent's switches, even in repeat-scenarios (IE, using Bug Bite with MegaScizor against Intimidate Lando twice instead of taking the chance to set up SD), and things like leaving Hawlucha in against Slowbro to take its Thunder Waves just seems like a bad idea in general (especially when you could have switched to Starmie or Rotom to take it).

By the end, it mostly seemed like you even got lucky with the MegaScizor sweep. I mean, credit where credit is due: You kept him alive long enough TO sweep and weakened his counters enough to matter, but I feel like there were too many mistakes here to really enjoy it. So… Meh.

I don't know how experienced you are with Pokemon, but if I'm to judge correctly, you seem like you're fairly new to it in terms of competitive play-- in which case, you're still learning, and you played decently here. Keep trying to improve, and work on your prediction ability.

Sure, it could have gone better, but he still won, didn't he? Try to critique, not criticize. Perhaps he is indeed a hardened competitive veteran, and was just having a bad day. We don't know unless he tells us.
Anyways...
I love clutch battles like this. It seems like there were hiccups abound on both sides, but ultimately both sides played well indeed. I'm relatively new to this (as in like, a week) and the players made choices that I would never have considered. As far as I am concerned, the match was very involved, with both sides doing great predictions at some point in the game.

I give this match a 7 out of 10. For some reason.

I'm not sure what you think the difference between critique and criticism is...? I'm assuming you're referring to constructive criticism vs destructive criticism, and I wasn't doing the latter. In any case, I'm fairly certain that the guy is NOT particularly experienced; it's evident in his choices and the way he plays, and there were a lot of simple mistakes that were REPEATEDLY made-- thus, NOT great predictions.

But I dunno, I guess one's enjoyment of a battle like this is more down to overall experience and level. Personally, I've been around the competitive scene for quite some time (and while I wouldn't call myself good, I think it would not be inaccurate to say that I DO have a fair bit of experience), and the kind of battles I personally find entertaining are the ones with more skill and thought involved. To each his own, I guess.

The battle was okay. Neither opponent made any great moves, and there were some bad cases of under-predicting (if that's a thing). But it was at least close.

I think volt switching with Rotom-W against a Virizion with its sub up was a horrible move. I assume the opponent expected a switch, and that's why he used close combat over leaf blade. Still, if this was a Swords Dance/Sub/Leaf Blade/Close Combat Virizion, I'm not sure you climb out of the hole at the end.

Picture-less warstories CAN work if there is excellent, descriptive, thoughtful commentary, but I found the analysis to be slightly underwhelming. Not bad, but just nothing really exceptional, and for some readers it might be hard to follow the flow of the battle.

Just my two cents.

On at least 95% of these war stories, there's always at least a few comments critiquing the war story as boring. I write war stories, try to think up unique strategies, and am basically here to entertain. So would someone PLEASE tell me what their definition of "exciting" is.

A exciting game is when both players are equally matched, make good predictions, and play mindgames with each other. They clearly explained why in the comments above.

Apart from or in addition to what 234 said, an entertaining one may also make a new narrative or some sort of joke about it. A long while ago there was a fairly famous Gen 4 warstory which had a team of Pokemon from Ash's collection facing off against some used by Cynthia, with a whole little story written to go along with it. Although, I think that's much more the exception than the rule, as that takes a lot of effort and creativity.
