I'm new and just got pokemon heartgold

I know with black and white out right now, it's probably what a lot of people are playing now. However, I decided to get heartgold anyway because I played a little bit of black and white before and wasn't too fond of it.

Since i just got heartgold, I'm curious if the wi-fi community is still active for this game. I would like to know because I am interested in competitive wifi battling. However i'm going to start that after i beat the single player game first...

But to answer your question, no, 4th gen games aren't used for trading or battling that much anymore.
